AI Article Synopsis

  • The study focuses on the rare lacrimal punctal tumors, analyzing their characteristics and outcomes after treatment with CO laser ablation and silicone stent intubation at a Taiwanese hospital over a seven-year period.
  • Among the 33 patients observed, there was a significant female predominance, with most tumors found in the lower punctum and a high incidence of melanocytic nevus compared to benign eyelid tumors.
  • Post-surgery, all patients showed good results with no complaints of epiphora, and 97% expressed satisfaction with their aesthetic outcomes, suggesting the treatment method is both safe and effective.

Article Abstract

Literature on lacrimal punctal tumors is limited due to their rarity. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the clinicopathological characteristics of these tumors and assess functional and aesthetic outcomes after CO laser ablation with silicone stent intubation. A retrospective consecutive study was conducted from December 2013 to November 2020. All patients who received CO laser ablation with silicone intubation for their punctal tumors at National Cheng Kung University Hospital, a tertiary hospital in Taiwan, were included in this study. Demographic and clinical information was gathered during preoperative and follow-up visits. Thirty-three Han Chinese patients with a solitary punctal tumor were included in this study. Demographically, we found a female predominance (75.8%), and most tumors were located at the lower punctum (69.7%). The incidence of melanocytic nevus was higher in punctal tumors (78.8%) than in benign eyelid tumors (22.3%). Irrigation tests were performed in the 33 patients during follow-up visits, all of whom exhibited patency of the lacrimal system. No patient complained of epiphora after surgery. Thirty-two patients (97%) were satisfied with the aesthetic outcome after surgery. Superpulse CO laser ablation followed by silicone stent intubation is a safe and effective treatment for benign punctal tumors. In addition, compared to those of eyelid tumors, the clinicopathological characteristics of lacrimal punctal tumors are different, and melanocytic nevus was the main cause of these tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • A total of 15 patients (5 men, 10 women) underwent the procedure, which involved excising the nevus while placing a silicone tube to support the area; surgeries lasted about 22 minutes on average.
  • Post-surgery results showed no recurrence of nevi, healthy healing with normal eyelid appearance, and no significant complications observed during follow-up periods ranging from 6 months to 2 years.

Bicanalicular stent versus mono-canalicular stent for post-oncological lacrimal duct reconstruction: A retrospective cohort study.

J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg

November 2024

The Lacrimal Center, The Senior Department of Ophthalmology, The Third Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital, 69 Yongding Road, Haidian District, Beijing 100039, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the outcomes of two different types of stents (bicanalicular and mono-canalicular) used for lacrimal duct reconstruction after cancer treatment, as previous comparisons were lacking.
  • A total of 75 patients were enrolled and divided into two groups, with significant differences found in stent duration and some postoperative complications like stent prolapse and punctal issues.
  • Overall, both stent types were equally effective in maintaining lacrimal duct function and minimizing tear overproduction post-surgery, highlighting the importance of appropriate case selection for optimal results.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of combining punctal plugs with cyclosporine eye drops in treating dry eye disease (DED) and reducing ocular inflammation.
  • In a clinical trial with 73 patients and an animal model, various metrics (like tear production and inflammation markers) were measured before and after treatment across three different groups.
  • Results showed that the combination therapy significantly improved eye function and reduced inflammation markers more effectively than using either treatment alone, suggesting it's a superior approach for managing DED.

Canalicular Cyst After Punctal Plug Insertion.

J Craniofac Surg

October 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital, Pusan National University School of Medicine.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 73-year-old male developed a canalicular cyst on his right lower eyelid after having absorbable punctal plugs inserted for dry eye syndrome 8 years earlier.
  • - The cyst was found on the medial side of the eyelid, causing ectropion but showing no signs of inflammation; surgical incision and drainage reduced its size.
  • - Imaging studies indicated cystic dilation and obstruction in the canaliculus, highlighting that canalicular cysts should be considered when similar patients present with masses in the eye area.
