Article Abstract

Online crowdfunding allows transgender patients to fundraise for their surgeries or hormonal therapy. In this study, we updated the geographic trends in fundraising for gender-affirming surgery and sought to establish the factors influencing the amount raised per campaign. Campaigns were identified from GoFundMe. In total, 1010 crowdfunding campaigns were identified. The West had the highest proportion of campaigns (=242, 34.6%). Controlling for each variable, we found that campaigns that raised the greatest amount of funds were associated with longer descriptions (<0.0001, =0.34), higher number of social media shares (<0.0001, =0.39), higher goal amount (=0.041, =0.19), and number of donors (<0.0001, =0.44).

Background: Evidence suggests that semi-facial respirators provide protection against contamination in high-risk environments, although the COVID-19 pandemic called for greater protection and viral inactivation capacity. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a novel semi-facial respirator containing chitosan nanoparticles, compared with a conventional N95 respirator on the incidence of laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 in healthcare professionals. The secondary outcomes were influenza infection, usability and comfort.

Background: Myocardial injury after a hip fracture is common and has a poor prognosis. Patients with a hip fracture and myocardial injury may benefit from accelerated surgery to remove the physiological stress associated with the hip fracture. This study aimed to determine if accelerated surgery is superior to standard care in terms of the 90-day risk of death in patients with a hip fracture who presented with an elevated cardiac biomarker/enzyme measurement at hospital arrival.

Affective economies in crowdfunding for cancer.

Med Anthropol Q

Cancer patients and survivors in the United States are increasingly likely to use online crowdfunding as a means of offsetting the expenses associated with their medical care. This practice of making an online appeal for support to a broad public audience constitutes an inadvertent form of informal emotional labor for its practitioners-labor in which striking the right affective notes in one's appeal is believed to be critical to fundraising outcomes. Drawing on ethnographic interviews, we suggest that crowdfunding produces an array of complex, often contradictory sentiments and narrative incentives for cancer patients and survivors-ultimately transforming the experience of serious illness.
