CO and O are known to be strong oxidizing reagents in biological systems. CO in particular can cause serious damage to DNA and proteins by H abstraction reactions. However, H abstraction of CO in the gas phase has not yet been reported. In this work we report on gas-phase ion/molecule reactions of CO and O with various molecules. CO was generated by the corona discharge of an O reagent gas using a cylindrical tube ion source. O was generated by the application of a 15 kHz high frequency voltage to a sharp needle in ambient air at the threshold voltage for the appearance of an ion signal. In the reactions of CO , a decrease in signal intensities of CO accompanied by the simultaneous increase of that of HCO was observed when organic compounds with H-C bond energies lower than ∼100 kcal mol such as -hexane, cyclohexane, methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, and toluene were introduced into the ion source. This clearly indicates the occurrence of H abstraction. O abstracts H from acid molecules such as formic, acetic, trifluoroacetic, nitric and amino acids. Gas-phase CO may play a role as a strong oxidizing reagent as it does in the condensed phase. The major discharge product CO in addition to O , O, and NO that are formed in ambient air may cause damage to biological systems.

In this paper, the Vernier effect of a double D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) in a Sagnac interferometer (SI) is proposed for the accurate detection of mixed methane gas content in the gas. The optical fiber structure of the effective sensing in the sensing SI loop and the effective sensing in the reference SI loop are the same.

As one of the most common air pollutants, fine particulate matter (PM) increases the risk of diseases in various systems, including the urinary system. In the present study, we exposed male and female C57BL/6J mice to PM for 8 weeks. Examination of renal function indices, including creatinine (CRE), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid (UA), and urinary microalbumin, indicated that the kidneys of female mice, not male mice, underwent early renal injury, exhibiting glomerular hyperfiltration.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of fecal sample collection methods on the intestinal microbiota composition in two cat populations: healthy cats and kidney stone-diseased cats. A multipronged approach to the refined mechanochemical synthesis of the semiconductor kesterite CuZnSnS with minimal quantities of adventitious oxygen as well as to optimizing handling procedures from that angle is described. Three precursor systems are used to provide a pool of freshly made cubic prekesterite nanopowders with no semiconductor properties and the thermally annealed at 500 °C tetragonal kesterite nanopowders of the semiconductor. Based on the previously reported high propensity of such nanopowders to long-term deteriorating oxidation in ambient air, suitable modifications of all crucial synthesis steps are implemented, which are directed toward excluding or limiting the materials' exposure to air.
