Vigorously developing new stationary phases to meet the requirements for the separation of positional isomers that have similar physicochemical properties is still an urgent topic in separation science. Herein, a single-crystalline covalent organic framework (COF-300) packed column for the separation of positional isomers in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was reported for the first time. Benefitting from its regular shape, excellent chemical and thermal stability, microporous feature, and strong hydrophobicity of single-crystalline COF-300, the single-crystalline COF-300-packed column showed excellent resolution for the separation of positional isomers, including nitroaniline, dichlorobenzene, dibromobenzene, diiodobenzene, diethylbenzene, chloronitrobenzene, bromonitrobenzene, and iodonitrobenzene isomers, which cannot be all separated on commercial columns and a polycrystalline COF-300-packed column. Especially, the resolution values for -/diiodobenzene and -/diiodobenzene were 4.45 and 2.53. Moreover, the alkylbenzene, monosubstituted aromatics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and the mixture of ethylbenzene and styrene were also baseline separated on the single-crystalline COF-300-packed column. This successful application not only confirmed the great potential of single-crystalline COFs in HPLC separation of positional isomers but also pioneered the utilization of single-crystalline COFs in separation science.

A portable optical detection system for rapid quantification of two rheumatoid arthritis biomarkers.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes joint damage and progressive destruction of adjacent cartilage and bones. Quick and accurate detection of rheumatoid factors (RF) and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCP) in serum is effective in diagnosing RA and preventing its progression. However, current methods for detecting these two biomarkers are costly, time-consuming, labor-intensive, and require specialized equipment.

Elucidating the structure and function of a membrane-active plant protein domain using in silico mutagenesis.

The Solanum tuberosum (common potato) plant specific insert (StPSI) is an antimicrobial protein domain that exhibits membrane-disrupting and membrane-fusing activity upon dimerization at acidic pH, activity proposed to involve electrostatic attraction and membrane anchoring mediated by specific positively-charged and conserved tryptophan residues, respectively. This study is the first to employ an in silico mutagenesis approach to clarify the structure-function relationship of a plant specific insert (PSI), where ten rationally-mutated StPSI variants were investigated using all-atom and coarse-grained molecular dynamics. The tryptophan (W) residue at position 18 (W18) of wild-type StPSI was predicted to confer structural flexibility to the dimer and mediate a partial separation of the assembled monomers upon bilayer contact, while residues including W77 and the lysine (K) residue at position 83 (K83) were predicted to stabilize secondary structure and influence association with the model membrane.

Objectives: Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) occurs disproportionately among opioid exposed newborns (OENs) compared to those unexposed. The extent that primary caregivers of OENs adhere to SUID-reducing infant care practices is unknown. We examined rates of SUID-reducing practices (smoking cessation, breastfeeding, and safe sleep [supine sleep, room-sharing not bed-sharing, nonuse of soft bedding or objects]) in a pilot sample of caregivers of OENs.

Institut für Anorganische Chemie, Universität Kiel, Max-Eyth.-Str. 2, 24118 Kiel, Germany.

The title compound, [CdBr(CHN)] , was prepared by the reaction of cadmium bromide with 2,5-di-methyl-pyrazine in water. Its asymmetric unit consists of one Cd cation and one 2,5-di-methyl-pyrazine ligand that are located on a crystallographic mirror plane as well as one bromide anion that occupies a general position. The Cd cations are sixfold coordinated by four bromide anions and two 2,5-di-methyl-pyrazine ligands within slightly distorted -CdBrN octa-hedra.
