Leachate treatment is crucial in landfill management. As landfill ages, inert constituents and ammonia nitrogen concentration in leachate increases, which results in a decrease in biological treatability. In this study, a full-scale MBR treating leachate was dynamically modeled using ASM1. The investigated landfill has been serving for more than 25 years; thus, a decrease in biodegradable organic content and an increase in nitrogen content of the leachate is expected in the years ahead. The calibrated model predicted MLSS, effluent COD, and effluent TN concentrations with high accuracy. Following the calibration study, it was found that soluble inert COD and soluble inert organic nitrogen fractions were the primary reasons of high COD and TKN concentrations in the effluent, respectively. The validated model of the full-scale MBR system treating leachate can be a useful tool to understand the limitations of the system. Soluble inert constituents of the leachate that pass through the membrane necessiate additional treatment processes for discharge into surface water bodies.

Protein corona (PC) formation confers novel biological properties to the original nanomaterial, impeding its uptake and targeting efficacy in cells and tissues. Although many studies discussing PC formation have focused on inert proteins that may inhibit the function of nanomaterials, some functional plasma proteins with intrinsic targeting capabilities can also be adsorbed to the surface of nanomaterials, with active ligand properties to improve the targeting ability. In this approach, nanomaterials are surface-engineered to promote the adsorption of specific functional plasma proteins that are directly targeted to transport nanomaterials to the target site.

Blending multiple polymers together to form the so-called "high-entropy polymers (HEPs)" can generate the effects of molecular dispersion in addition to suppressing polymer phase separation. We embedded a semiconducting polymer (conjugated polymers, CPs) in an optically inert matrix composed of polymer species and found that a molecule-level dispersion is attained in HEPs defined as ≥ 5. In the regime of dilute CP concentrations, the photonic properties vary widely in the = 1 matrices owing to diverse solubility parameters, but the distribution narrows with , and the CP starts to exhibit behaviors of molecule-level dispersion at ≥ 5, where the matrix polymers compete with each other to exert direct influences on the embedded CP.

Effervescent formulation helps in faster and better absorption of drugs, especially those that are rapidly soluble in water. However, these tablets require special packaging in order to prevent them from absorbing moisture, hence increasing cost. We compared an effervescent tablet prepared using an in-house developed method (multi-layer tablet with acid and base part separated by an inert layer) to a European effervescent tablet (Efferalgan®) in a single-center, randomized cross-over study among twelve healthy volunteers.

Asymmetric Amination of Unstrained C(sp)-C(sp) Bonds.

The asymmetric functionalization of unstrained C(sp)-C(sp) bonds could be a powerful strategy to stereoselectively reconstruct the backbone of an organic compound, but such reactions are rare. Although allylic substitutions have been used frequently to construct C-C bonds by the cleavage of more reactive C-X bonds (X is usually an O atom of an ester) by transition metals, the reverse process that involves the replacement of a C-C bond with a C-heteroatom bond is rare and generally considered thermodynamically unfavorable. We show that an unstrained, inert allylic C-C σ bond can be converted to a C-N bond stereoselectively via a designed solubility-control strategy, which makes the thermodynamically unfavorable process possible.

HTS library plate rejuvenation using a DMSO-rich atmosphere.

Dry DMSO can rapidly pull water vapor out of the air due to its hygroscopic nature. This is a well-documented problem within drug discovery, particularly within high-throughput screening (HTS). This hydration is caused by atmospheric moisture being absorbed each time a compound library is used.
