AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Objective: Bowel sounds (BS) carry useful information about gastrointestinal condition and feeding status. Interest in computerized bowel sound-based analysis has grown recently and techniques have evolved rapidly. An important first step for these analyses is to extract BS segments, whilst neglecting silent periods. The purpose of this study was to develop a convolutional neural network-based BS detector able to detect all types of BS with accurate time stamps, and to investigate the effect of food consumption on some acoustic features of BS with the proposed detector.

Results: Audio recordings from 40 volunteers were collected and a BS dataset consisting of 6700 manually labelled segments was generated for training and testing the proposed BS detector. The detector attained 91.06% and 90.78% accuracy for the validation dataset and across-subject test dataset, respectively, with a well-balanced sensitivity and specificity. The detection rates evaluated on different BS types were also satisfactory. Four acoustic features were evaluated to investigate the food effect. The total duration and spectral bandwidth of BS showed significant differences before and after food consumption, while no significant difference was observed in mean-crossing rate values.

Conclusion: We demonstrated that the proposed BS detector is effective in detecting all types of BS, and providing an accurate time stamp for each BS. The characteristics of BS types and the effect on detection accuracy is discussed. The proposed detector could have clinical application for post-operative ileus prognosis, and monitoring of food intake.

Spinning coding masks, recognized for their fast modulation rate and cost-effectiveness, are now often used in real-time single-pixel imaging (SPI). However, in the photon-counting regime, they encounter difficulties in synchronization between the coding mask patterns and the photon detector, unlike digital micromirror devices. To address this issue, we propose a scheme that assumes a constant disk rotation speed throughout each cycle and models photon detection as a non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP).

Background: Modern radiation therapy techniques, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT), use complex fluence modulation strategies to achieve optimal patient dose distribution. Ensuring their accuracy necessitates rigorous patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA), traditionally done through pretreatment measurements with detector arrays. While effective, these methods are labor-intensive and time-consuming.

Many studies on differential item functioning (DIF) detection rely on single detection methods (SDMs), each of which necessitates specific assumptions that may not always be validated. Using an inappropriate SDM can lead to diminished accuracy in DIF detection. To address this limitation, a novel multi-detector combination (MDC) approach is proposed.

High-Brightness Color-Tunable AC-Driven Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes for Integrated Passive High-Electric-Field Contactless Detection.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

December 2024

Institute of Optoelectronics Technology, Key Laboratory of Luminescence and Optical Information, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing 100044, China.

This work explores the carrier recombination dynamics of AC-driven quantum dot (QD) light-emitting diodes (AC-QLEDs) and proposes their application in the field of electric field contactless detection. Different sequences of green QD (GQD)/red QD (RQD) bilayer thin films as the emission layer of AC-QLEDs were fabricated via film transfer printing to ensure the complete morphology of each layer. AC-QLEDs with the emission layer as the sequence of GQD + RQD (GR-QLEDs) show a significantly enhanced carrier recombination efficiency due to its stable energy level structure, achieving the highest peak brightness ever recorded for vertically emitting brightness of 1648.

Development of anticoincidence detector specializing in small-angle Compton scattering gamma rays for boron neutron capture therapy.

Appl Radiat Isot

December 2024

Division of Quantum and Radiation Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka Metropolitan University, 1-2 Gakuen-cho, Naka-ku, Sakai, Osaka, 599-8570, Japan.

A novel anticoincidence detector is proposed for the measurement of 478 keV gamma radiation for evaluation of boron neutron capture therapy. The Compton continuum around the target photopeak position is effectively suppressed by measuring only the Compton gamma rays scattered at small angles from the primary detector. A numerical evaluation using Monte Carlo simulations estimated an 80% reduction in counts, and the developed prototype detector showed 4% suppression of the Compton continuum of cobalt-60 gamma rays.
