Purpose: Prosthesis geometry and behaviour limit the footwear options available to women. Using a commercially available prosthetic foot that permits user-alignment to accommodate shoes with different heel heights, we investigated the effect of footwear on gait kinematics, with and without adjustment for differences in heel-forefoot differential.

Materials And Methods: Three women with transtibial amputation walked at a self-selected pace, first in an athletic shoe (prosthetist-aligned; baseline condition), then (i) in a flatter shoe without realigning the prosthesis, and (ii) in flat and heeled shoes following user re-alignment. Kinematics in each condition were compared to baseline.

Results: Baseline gait patterns were highly variable across participants. Gait was slower in comparison to baseline in all conditions, but movement compensations varied across participants. An increased lower limb extension tendency was evident with the misaligned prosthesis. With user re-alignment to accommodate the shoe there were fewer deviations from baseline, however kinematic differences remained in both the flat and heeled shoes.

Conclusions: The user-alignment feature of the prosthetic foot reduced the effect of a change in footwear on kinematics, and permitted walking in heeled shoes when it might otherwise not be possible. Persistence of some deviations suggests differences in walking task demand remained despite adjustment.Implications for rehabilitationPermitting prosthesis users to don footwear of choice may improve body image, well-being and quality of life following amputation.Prosthetic feet that permit user ankle adjustment can reduce gait deviations associated with a change in footwear heel height, although kinematic adaptations are individual.

Accuracy of self-reported foot strike pattern detection among endurance runners.

Front Sports Act Living

December 2024

Exercise and Functional Fitness Laboratory, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, United States.

Introduction: Foot strike pattern is often associated with running related injury and the focus of training and rehabilitation for athletes. The ability to modify foot strike pattern depends on awareness of foot strike pattern before being able to attempt change the pattern. Accurate foot strike pattern detection may help prevent running related injury (RRI) and facilitate gait modifications and shoe transitions.

Human walking gait is a personal story written by the body, a tool for understanding biological identity in healthcare and security. Gait analysis methods traditionally diverged between these domains but are now merging their complementary strengths to unlock new possibilities. Using large ground reaction force (GRF) datasets for gait recognition is a way to uncover subtle variations that define individual gait patterns.

Gait parameters in Healthy Older Adults in Korea.

J Mov Disord

November 2024

Department of Neurology, Wonju Severance Christian Hospital, Yonsei University Wonju College of Medicine, Wonju, South Korea.

Objective: Gait is the most fundamental and common form of human locomotion, essential in daily activities. We aimed to investigate gait parameters in medically and cognitively healthy older adults to determine the independent effects of age, physical attributes, and cognition on these parameters.

Methods: This retrospective study enrolled healthy older adult participants aged ≥50 years with normal cognition and no neurological symptoms or medical/surgical histories that could potentially affect gait.

Article Synopsis
  • Exposure footwear for firemen (EFF) is essential protective gear for firefighters, but its impact on walking biomechanics is not well understood.
  • A study with 20 male firefighters compared the effects of EFF and fitness shoes on lower limb movement and muscle activation during walking tasks.
  • Results showed that wearing EFF changed joint movement patterns and increased muscle activation, potentially raising the risk of fatigue and injuries; thus, EFF should be made lighter and more flexible, and training should focus on strengthening specific muscle groups.
