Given the heightened focus on decreasing length of stay and readmissions following total joint arthroplasty, meticulous preoperative optimization has become increasingly important. The goal of this study was to evaluate the association between preoperative anemia and postoperative morbidity and mortality at 30 days. We used the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database to identify patients who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) between 2006 and 2016. Cohorts were defined based on preoperative hemoglobin and were evaluated for 30-day complications as well as 30-day readmission and non-home discharge. The survey of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database yielded 198,233 patients who underwent TKA between 2006 and 2016. Preoperative anemia was found to be a risk factor for all complications (4.73% vs 3.22%, <.001) as well as non-home discharge (37.0% vs 24.2%, <.001) and unplanned readmission (4.99% vs 3.14%, <.001) using both bivariate analysis and multivariate analysis. Meticulous optimization of patients at risk for complications is critical in the era of bundled care and increased focus on rapid transition from inpatient to outpatient care. Preoperative anemia was associated with the total postoperative complication rate at 30 days following TKA as well as non-home discharge and unplanned readmission. Surgeons should attempt to identify patients with preoperative anemia and correct underlying low blood levels to help minimize the rate of postoperative complications. [. 2022;45(2):e86-e90.].

Background: Despite numerous operative and non-operative treatment modalities, patients with glioblastoma (GBM) have a dismal prognosis. Identifying predictors of survival and recurrence is an essential strategy for guiding treatment decisions, and existing literature demonstrates associations between hematologic data and clinical outcomes in cancer patients. As such, we provide a novel analysis that examines associations between preoperative hematologic data and postoperative outcomes following GBM resection.

Background: Patients with comorbid coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease usually undergo coronary artery bypass grafting alongside valve replacement or ring repair surgeries. Following these procedures, they typically receive a combination of anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy, which notably heightens their bleeding risk. However, Current scoring systems provide limited predictive capability.

Background: Anemia is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, there is little evidence regarding the relationship between hemoglobin (HB) and cerebral infarction after revascularization in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD). This study aimed to explore the relationship between postoperative cerebral infarction and HB in patients with MMD and to establish a predictive model.

Background: Hip and knee arthroplasty remain risk procedures for bleeding complications. The prevalence of preoperative anaemia prior to elective joint replacement is high. There are no standardized guidelines in Germany for the diagnosis and treatment of perioperative anaemia in elective hip and knee arthroplasty.

Frailty impacts all-cause mortality after endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair: a retrospective cohort study.

J Nutr Health Aging

January 2025

Department of Vascular Surgery, Beijing Hospital, National Center of Gerontology, Institute of Geriatric Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of frailty and inflammation on all-cause mortality in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) who underwent endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), and key risk factors were also explored.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 174 patients with AAA who underwent EVAR at Beijing Hospital between 2016 and 2024. Frailty was assessed using the modified five-item Frailty Index (mFI-5).
