Background/aim: To assess the dosimetric influence of a semi-cylindrical beam spoiler (sCBS) for the treatment of early glottic cancer using a 6 MV photon beam.

Patients And Methods: The 2D dose distributions were also calculated and measured with and without the sCBS and with a 0.5 cm thick bolus. A retrospective study of 8 patients treated between 2012 and 2018 was performed.

Results: The 2D dose distributions obtained from the treatment planning system (TPS) and film measurements were in good agreement. In the planning study, the V, V, conformal index (CI), and homogeneity index (HI) of all pPTVs for the sCBS plans were better than those for the open field plans (p<0.01). Especially, sCBS plans had better skin sparing effect than bolus plans (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The sCBS of the 6 MV photon beam could be a useful tool for the treatment of early glottic cancers.

An experimental study of the semi-cylindrical self-magnetic insulated diode with No. 25 transformer oil and methyl silicone oil filled into stainless steel metal foam as anode discharging materials is carried out for the first time. The results show that the lifetime of this type of ion beam diode is about 3000 discharges, significantly higher than that of the conventional solid-film ion beam diode, which is about 400 discharges.

A portable multichannel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor device is presented in this study. As an optical biosensor device, the core component of its light path is a semi-cylindrical prism, which is used as the coupling unit for the excitation of the SPR phenomena. Based on this prism, a wedge-shaped incident light beam including a continuous angle range (10°) is chosen to replace the commonly-used parallel light beam in traditional SPR devices, in which the incident angle is adjusted by a sophisticated mechanical system.

The secondary electron emission of metals induced by slow ions is characterized in a beam chamber by means of two coaxial semi-cylindrical electrodes with different apertures. The voltages of the outer electrode (screening), inner electrode (collector), and sample holder (target) were set independently in order to measure the effective yield of potential and kinetic electron emissions during ion bombardment. Aluminum samples were exposed to quantified beams of argon ions up to 2000 eV and to oxygen atoms and molecules in order to mimic the plasma-surface interactions on metallic targets during reactive sputtering.
