We report the results of an attempt to reproduce a reported cavity catalysis of the ester hydrolysis of para-nitrophenyl acetate due to vibrational strong coupling. While we achieved the same light-matter coupling strength and detuning, we did not observe the reported ten-fold increase in the reaction rate constant. Furthermore, no obvious detuning dependence was observed. The inconsistency with the reported literature suggests that cavity catalysis is sensitive to experimental details beyond the onset of vibrational strong coupling. This indicates that other important factors are involved and have been overlooked so far. We find that more investigation into the limits, key factors, and mechanisms to reliably actualize cavity modified reactions is needed.

All-angle unidirectional flat-band acoustic metasurfaces.

Nat Commun

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore, Singapore.

Flat bands have empowered novel phenomena such as robust canalization with strong localization, high-collimation and low-loss propagation. However, the spatial symmetry protection in photonic or acoustic lattices naturally forces flat bands to manifest in pairs aligned at an inherently specific angle, resulting in a fixed bidirectional canalization. Here, we report an acoustic flat-band metasurface, allowing not only unidirectional canalization at all in-plane angles but also robust tunability in band alignment.

The rapid industrialization and human activities in catchments have posed notable global challenges in removing of heavy metal contaminants from wastewater. Here, Schiff-bases (SB) of cyanoguanidine (CG) and salicylaldehyde (SA) were covalently grafted on a magnetic nanocomposite of chitosan to form a hybrid magnetic nanostructure (FeO@CS-CGSB). The synthesized structure was characterized using various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis (BET).

Among the numerous measurements carried out during a well-logging procedure, the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) assessment is one of the fundamental analyses in determining the economic viability of a well for the oil industry. Nowadays, two reliable approaches, Wireline Logging (WL) and Logging While Drilling (LWD), stand out. WL comprises the acquisition of NMR data under static conditions.

People with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) may have difficulty attending rehabilitation sessions. We investigated the feasibility (adherence and satisfaction) of implementing an 8-week home-based somatosensory, entirely remote, self-training programme using the TrainPain smartphone app in people with FMS. The secondary aim was to evaluate the effect on pain symptoms.

The methoxy radical, CHO, has long been studied experimentally and theoretically by spectroscopists because it displays a weak Jahn-Teller effect in its electronic ground state, combined with a strong spin-orbit interaction. In this work, we report an extension of the measurement of the pure rotational spectrum of the radical in its vibrational ground state in the submillimeter-wave region (350-860 GHz). CHO was produced by H-abstraction from methanol using F atoms, and its spectrum was probed in absorption using an association of source-frequency modulation and Zeeman modulation spectroscopy.
