Chemical Composition of Mexicali Propolis and Its Effect on Gastric Repair in an Indomethacin-Induced Gastric Injury Murine Model.

Antioxidants (Basel)

January 2025

Laboratorio de Investigación Biomédica en Productos Naturales, Carrera de Medicina, UNAM, FES Iztacala, Avenida de los Barrios Número 1, Tlalnepantla de Baz 54090, Mexico.

Propolis is a resinous substance produced by bees that has several biomedical properties that could contribute to the repair process of the gastric mucosa, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, healing, and gastroprotective properties. Thus, this study aimed to determine the chemical composition of Mexicali propolis, its antioxidant capacity, and its effect on gastric repair. Three polarity-directed extracts were obtained: the ethanolic extract, the ethyl acetate extract, and the hexane extract.

Elucidating the effect of camel α-lactalbumin in modulating obesity-related metabolic disorders in an obese rat model.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Laboratory of Physiology, Pathophysiology and Biochemistry of Nutrition, Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences, Earth and Universe, University of Tlemcen, Tlemcen 13000, Algeria. Electronic address:

Camel α-Lactalbumin (α-LAC) has been shown to exert bioactivities for Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and anti-inflammation, showing the ability to treat obesity-related metabolic disorders. Herein, we present a novel process to purify α-LAC in a single chromatographic step from camel whey in a flow-through format. We also demonstrate the role of α-LAC modulation strategies for the treatment of obesity.

To curb the obesity epidemic, it is imperative that we improve our understanding of the mechanisms controlling fat mass and body weight regulation. While great progress has been made in mapping the biological feedback forces opposing weight loss, the mechanisms countering weight gain remain less well defined. Here, we integrate a mouse model of intragastric overfeeding with a comprehensive evaluation of the regulatory aspects of energy balance, encompassing food intake, energy expenditure, and fecal energy excretion.
