Mandatory vaccination for COVID-19 has received intense political and ethical debates, while the literature on the causal effects of vaccination mandates on vaccination outcomes is very limited. In this study, we examine the effects of the announcement of vaccine mandates (VMs) for workers working in three sectors, including health, education, and state governments, on the uptake of first-dose and second-dose vaccination across 50 states in the United States of America. We show that VM announcements have heterogeneous effects; hence, standard two-way fixed effects and difference-in-differences estimators are biased.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), caused by alcelaphine herpesvirus-1 (AIHV-1) transmitted from wildebeest, is a lethal cattle disease with significant impacts on East African pastoralists. Development of a live attenuated MCF vaccine has prompted research into its use in communities at risk. This study reports results from the first utilisation of the MCF vaccine in locally-owned cattle under field conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates a new meningococcal vaccine (MenABCWY) that combines components of the existing MenB vaccine (4CMenB) and the MenACWY vaccine, aiming to provide broad immunization against various meningococcal strains and ease vaccination schedules.
  • Conducted as a phase 3 randomized trial across multiple countries, healthy participants aged 10-25 were assigned to receive different vaccine schedules to assess safety, immune response, and consistency of vaccine lots.
  • The trial primarily focused on the immune response to MenB strains, comparing MenABCWY's effectiveness to 4CMenB and evaluating the consistency of immune responses among different production lots of the vaccines.

Background/aim: Critical coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a rare but devastating complication of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection in children and adolescents. This study aimed to assess the risk factors for, and evaluate the vaccine effectiveness against, critical COVID-19 during the 2022 Omicron Surge in Taiwan.

Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 41 pediatric patients with critical COVID-19 (which required mechanical ventilation, inotropic agents, extracorporeal membrane oxygenator, or resulting in in-hospital death) and 793 with non-critical COVID-19 who were hospitalized at National Taiwan University Children Hospital during the 2022 Omicron Surge.
