The use of antibiotic-impregnated cement as a local antibiotic delivery system is well-established as an adjunctive treatment for chronic osteomyelitis. Because the elution of antibiotics is a surface area phenomenon, the geometry of the cement is an important consideration. The antibiotic cement bead rouleaux technique is a simple and efficient method of bead fabrication that requires only 10 minutes of preparation time and readily available operating room supplies. The discoid structure of the beads provides 3 times the surface-area-to-volume ratio of a spherical bead, which facilitates antibiotic elution. Given the speed and ease of fabrication, along with optimized geometry, the antibiotic cement bead rouleaux is a useful addition to the surgeon's repertoire.

Introduction: There is a worldwide trend toward 'revisiting' cemented total hip arthroplasty (THA). In Japan, however, cemented THAs accounts for 11%, and the percentage of cemented hemiarthroplasty is estimated to be less than 10%. This review was designed to reconsider the option of cemented THA and to encourage policy changes in Japan to support the best possible care for patients.

Background: Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) antibiotic-laden bone cement (ALBC) is commonly used in total joint arthroplasty to treat and potentially prevent prosthetic joint infection (PJI). Multiple properties impact the elution characteristics of antibiotics from PMMA-based ALBC, including viscosity. What is not known is how medium-viscosity cement formulations affect antibiotic elution and how different cement products from different manufacturers compare regarding reaching the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antibiotics for common PJI-causing organisms in an in vitro setting.

Background: The shoulder girdle and proximal humerus are common sites for neoplastic lesions be it benign or malignant. We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of a frugal method of reconstruction of the proximal humerus for neoplastic lesions at short to medium term follow-up.
Methods: Data for this retrospective case series was collected from an electronic data base held at the primary authors institution.
