The study of the surface properties of materials is key in determining whether the material will be suitable for medical purposes. One of these properties is hydrophobicity, which is important when assessing its behavior against bacterial adhesion. In this work, we have studied the influence of the solvent (chloroform, acetone, and tetrahydrofuran) and the substrate (glass, PTFE, silicone, and Ti6Al4V) on which polylactic acid is deposited in solution to manufacture films by solvent-casting. Thus, it has been found that there are no significant differences in hydrophobicity and surface tension among the solvents evaluated, but there are significant differences with respect to the substrates: PLA films casted on silicone are hydrophobic, while those casted on the rest of the substrates are hydrophilic. This is related to the fact that the silicone interacts with the polymer modifying its spatial arrangement, exposing its methyl groups towards the interface with the air. In this way, it has been shown that, when manufacturing PLA films, it is important to choose the right surface on which to deposit them, depending on their desired function.

Effect of poly(vinyl alcohol)-g-poly(lactic acid) on the oxygen barrier performance of poly(lactic acid)-based film.

Int J Biol Macromol

State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering of China (Sichuan University), Polymer Research Institute of Sichuan University, Chengdu 610065, China. Electronic address:

In order to improve the oxygen barrier performance of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), a simple and economical melt blending method was chosen and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) with excellent oxygen barrier was used as the reinforcing phase to meet high oxygen needs. To improve compatibility, PLA was grafted onto PVOH through L-LA ring opening polymerization to get poly(vinyl alcohol)-graft-poly(lactic acid) (PVOH-g-PLA). The films with high oxygen barrier performance were prepared by blending PLA with PVOH-g-PLA.

Sustainable poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) blends were compatibilized by the environmentally friendly epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) through the chemical reaction of epoxy functional groups on ESO with the terminated carboxyl and hydroxyl groups of PLA/PPC. The compatibilization effect of ESO was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, rheological property testing, differential scanning calorimetry, and morphological observations. It was revealed that the molecular chain entanglement between PLA and PPC was significantly enhanced and the dispersed PPC phase size was decreased, which endowed the blend with high viscosity modulus, low tan δ, and great stretchability, especially for the blend containing 1.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the antimicrobial properties of TiO incorporated polylactic acid (PLA) films activated by pulsed light (PL), using different ratios of TiO/PLA.
  • The films were tested for their effectiveness against bacteria after various PL treatments, revealing significant reductions in bacterial populations, especially with a 5-second PL treatment.
  • Results showed that the TiO-PLA films maintained their antibacterial activity for 2 hours post-treatment, indicating their potential use in food packaging applications sensitive to UV light.

In this study, researchers synthesized sodium lignosulfonate (LS) modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (L-MWCNTs) using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) method and incorporated them into polylactic acid (PLA) composite films using a solvent evaporation method. The nanofiller content ranged between 0.5 % and 1.

Effect of biodegradable microplastics and Cd co-pollution on Cd bioavailability and plastisphere in soil-plant system.

State Environmental Protection Key Laboratory of Environmental Health Impact Assessment of Emerging Contaminants, Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences, Shanghai 200233, China; School of Resource and Environmental Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai 200237, China. Electronic address:

Biodegradable plastics (BPs) are regarded as ecomaterials and are emerging as a substitute for traditional non-degradable plastics. However, the information on the interaction between biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) and cadmium (Cd) in agricultural soil is still limited. Here, lettuce plants were cultured in BMPs (polylactic acid (PLA) MPs and poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) MPs) and Cd co-polluted soil for 35 days.
