Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) occurs when tuberculosis (TB) bacilli disseminate and seed into the meninges, triggering a severe inflammatory response that often leads to brain infarction. It is the most severe and debilitating form of childhood TB with high mortality, and children who survive TBM often suffer lifelong physical and neuro-disability resulting in emotional, social, and economic burdens for families. In the early stages the symptoms may be non-specific and so the diagnosis is often made late when the patient already has significant brain injury.

Convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) is the most common neurological emergency in children and the second most common neurological emergency in adults. Mortality is low, but morbidity, including neuro-disability, learning difficulties, and a de-novo epilepsy, may be as high as 22%. The longer the duration of CSE, the more difficult it is to terminate, and the greater the risk of morbidity.

Neonatal herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSVE) often results in long-lasting neuro-disability in affected children. In addition to primary HSVE and HSVE relapses, children with herpes simplex virus are at increased risk of developing anti--methyl--aspartate receptor encephalitis (NMDARe), an autoimmune encephalitis. In this study, we describe a patient with neonatal disseminated herpes infection, who developed HSVE after discontinuation of 2 years of acyclovir suppressive therapy.

Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Very Preterm, Moderate-Late Preterm and Term-Born Neonates: A Systematic Review.

Objective: To examine white matter abnormalities, measured by diffusion tensor imaging, in very preterm (<32 weeks) and moderate-late preterm neonates (32-37 weeks) at term-equivalent age, compared with healthy full-term controls (≥37 weeks).

Study Design: A search of Medline (PubMed) was conducted to identify studies with diffusion data collected on very preterm, moderate-late preterm and full-term neonates, using the guidelines from the Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology and PRISMA statements.

Results: Eleven studies were included with diffusion tensor imaging data from 554 very preterm, 575 moderate-late preterm, and 318 full-term neonates.
