Coat color is a trait of economic significance in horses. Variants in seven genes have been documented to cause white patterning in horses. Of the 34 variants that have been identified in KIT proto-oncogene, receptor tyrosine kinase (), 27 have only been reported in a single individual or family and thus not all are routinely offered for genetic testing. Therefore, to enable proper use of marker-assisted selection, determining breed specificity for these alleles is warranted. Screening 19 unregistered all-white Shetland ponies for 16 white patterning markers identified 14 individuals whose phenotype could not be explained by testing results. In evaluating other known dominant white variants, 14 horses were heterozygous for W13. W13 was previously only reported in two quarter horses and a family of Australian miniature horses. Genotyping known white spotting variants in 30 owner-reported white animals (25 Miniature Horses and five Shetland ponies) identified two additional American Miniature Horses. The estimated allele frequency of W13 in the American Miniature Horse was 0.0063 (79 , 1 ) and the allele was not detected in a random sample ( = 59) of Shetland ponies. No homozygous W13 individuals were identified and ponies had a similar all-white coat with pink skin phenotype, regardless of the other white spotting variants present, demonstrating that W13 results in a Mendelian inherited dominant white phenotype and homozygosity is likely lethal. These findings document the presence of W13 in the American Miniature Horse and Shetland pony populations at a low frequency and illustrate the importance of testing for this variant in additional breeds.

Background: Advancing the retrograde microcatheter (MC) into the antegrade guide catheter during retrograde chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) can be challenging or impossible, preventing guidewire externalization.

Objectives: To detail and evaluate all the techniques focused on wiring to achieve intubation of the distal tip of a microcatheter, balloon, or stent with an antegrade or retrograde guidewire, aiming to reduce complications by minimizing tension on fragile collaterals during externalization and enabling rapid antegrade conversion in various clinical scenarios.

Methods: We describe the two main techniques, tip-in and rendezvous, and their derivatives such a facilitated tip-in, manual MC-tip modification, tip-in the balloon, tip-in the stent, deep dive rendezvous, catch-it and antegrade microcatheter probing.

The management of advanced heart failure (HF) has long posed significant challenges due to its complex and chronic nature. Heart transplantation, while effective, is not always feasible due to the limited availability of donor organs. In this context, long term mechanical circulatory support and mainly left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have emerged as a vital intervention to fill this gap.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of using a miniature external fixator with a small incision for treating proximal phalangeal fractures in 29 patients over a period from January 2020 to December 2022.
  • Results showed that after an average follow-up of 8.3 months, most patients experienced good fracture healing with a range of active flexion scores, indicating positive outcomes.
  • The conclusion highlights that this treatment method is straightforward, supports early rehabilitation, and has a high success rate with minimal complications.

Intestinal transplantation (ITx) is the definitive treatment for intestinal failure but has the highest rejection rate among solid organ transplants, requiring high doses of immunosuppressive medication, which is associated with high rates of infection, graft-versus-host disease, and malignancy. Transplant tolerance would overcome the need for long-term immunosuppression (ISP). Using nonmyeloablative conditioning, our laboratory has developed a novel swine model of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) that produces durable mixed chimerism (MC) and immune tolerance without toxicity.

The telecommunication wavelengths are crucial for developing a photonic integrated circuit (PIC). The absorption fingerprints of many gases lie within these spectral ranges, offering the potential to create a miniaturized gas sensor for PIC. This work presents novel double Fano resonances within the telecommunication band, based on silicon metasurfaces for selective gas sensing applications.
