A Strong Evidence Outbreak of Enteritidis in Central Italy Linked to the Consumption of Contaminated Raw Sheep Milk Cheese. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Salmonellosis is the second most commonly reported gastrointestinal infection in humans after campylobacteriosis, and an important cause of foodborne outbreaks in the EU/EEA. The vast majority (72.4%) of the salmonellosis foodborne outbreaks reported in EU in 2019 were caused by Enteritidis, even if their total number due to this serovar decreased. In spring 2020, a foodborne outbreak of Enteritidis occurred in the Marche region (Central Italy), involving 85 people. The common exposure source was a cheese, pecorino "primo sale", produced with raw sheep milk. The cheese batches were produced by two local dairies, with a livestock production facility, also including a sheep farm, being part of one dairy. Bacteriological analysis of samples collected allowed the detection of Enteritidis in animal faeces, environmental samples, raw-milk bulk tanks and milk taken from single animals. These data confirm that, despite the scarce scientific evidence, Enteritidis can infect sheep and be shed into the animals' milk. Hence, this is a real risk for public health when unpasteurized milk is used in production of such cheese. The present paper describes the results of the investigations conducted to clarify this outbreak.

Drying is one of the most effective preservation methods for extending the shelf-life of perishable foods. The microbial safety of low-moisture food products had not been recognized as a concern until outbreaks reported over the past decade in products contaminated with bacterial pathogens, in particular . There is now an urgent need to understand the influence of process conditions on the thermal inactivation of pathogens in various drying operations.

Salmonellosis outbreaks are global issues primarily associated with the consumption of poultry products, which may be infected with Salmonella. The use of lytic bacteriophages could be a safe and effective approach to reduce Salmonella prevalence in poultry and subsequently the incidence in humans. This study examined the value of prophylactic phage treatment on Salmonella levels in chickens and the effect of such treatment on their overall gut microbiome.

Background: Gram-negative Salmonella bacilli are one of the most common bacterial causes of gastrointestinal infections. Well-selected and targeted microbiological diagnostics enable the detection and identification of the etiological agent of infection, however, standardized, routine and recommended methods do not always allow for the identification of the biological agent in an unambiguous manner. Next-generation sequencing has become an ideal tool for identifying microorganisms and tracking infection transmission in outbreaks for epidemiological purposes.

This report by the European Food Safety Authority and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control presents the results of zoonoses monitoring and surveillance activities carried out in 2023 in 27 Member States (MSs), the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland) and 10 non-MSs. Key statistics on zoonoses and zoonotic agents in humans, food, animals and feed are provided and interpreted historically. In 2023, the first and second most reported zoonoses in humans were campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis, respectively.

One Health approach probes zoonotic non-typhoidal Salmonella infections in China: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

J Glob Health

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Systems Health Science of Zhejiang Province, School of Life Science, Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study, Hangzhou; University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Zoonotic infections like non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) are serious public health concerns, especially in China, but there is a lack of integrated studies using the One Health approach to investigate their prevalence and resistance patterns.
  • This study employed a systematic review and meta-analysis, examining NTS dynamics over decades, focusing on spatiotemporal prevalence, serovar distribution, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), utilizing data from multiple databases.
  • Findings revealed a 7.35% overall prevalence of NTS, higher in northern China, with poultry as the main source of key serovars; AMR rates were notably high at 73.63%, but showed improvement after a ban on excess use of antimicro
