Guidelines for a Morphometric Analysis of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells by Scanning Electron Microscopy. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

The invention of a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pushed the imaging methods and allowed for the observation of cell details with a high resolution. Currently, SEM appears as an extremely useful tool to analyse the morphology of biological samples. The aim of this paper is to provide a set of guidelines for using SEM to analyse morphology of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, taking as model cases bacteria and B-35 rat neuroblastoma cells. Herein, we discuss the necessity of a careful sample preparation and provide an optimised protocol that allows to observe the details of cell ultrastructure (≥ 50 nm) with a minimum processing effort. Highlighting the versatility of morphometric descriptors, we present the most informative parameters and couple them with molecular processes. In this way, we indicate the wide range of information that can be collected through SEM imaging of biological materials that makes SEM a convenient screening method to detect cell pathology.

Background: Different species of sea cucumbers in various regions have diverse preferred habitats and feeding habits. However, detailed research on the correlation between food selection and habitat preference of sea cucumbers, as well as their adaptive adjustments to specific habitat types, is still lacking.

Methods: A field study was carried out to explore the relationship between food selection and habitat preference, as well as the adaptation process, of the tropical sea cucumber Stichopus chloronotus, which has specific food preferences.

Harnessing RNA-Protein Interactions for Therapeutic Interventions.

Chem Asian J

December 2024

IISER Bhopal: Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal, Dept of Chemistry, Bhopal Bypass Road, Bhauri, Bhopal, 462066, Bhopal, INDIA.

Interactions between RNAs and proteins play a crucial role in various diseases, including viral infections and cancer. Hence, understanding and inhibiting these interactions are important for the development of novel therapeutics. However, the identification of drugs targeting RNA-protein interactions with high specificity and affinity is challenged by our limited molecular understanding of these interactions.

Alga-dominated geothermal spring communities in Yellowstone National Park (YNP), USA, have been the focus of many studies, however, relatively little is known about the composition and community interactions which underpin these ecosystems. Our goal was to determine, in three neighboring yet distinct environments in Lemonade Creek, YNP, how cells cope with abiotic stressors over the diurnal cycle. All three environments are colonized by two photosynthetic lineages, and , both of which are extremophilic Cyanidiophyceae red algae.

Reciprocal regulation between bacterial secretion systems and host metabolism: Enhancing bacterial intracellular survival capability.

Microbiol Res

December 2024

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Jiangsu University School of Medicine, Zhenjiang, Jiangsu 212013, China. Electronic address:

Secretion systems are intricate nanomachines present on many bacterial cell membranes that deliver various bacterially-encoded effector proteins into eukaryotic or prokaryotic cells. They are pivotal in bacterial invasion, host colonization, and pathogenesis. After infection, bacteria employ these machines to deliver toxic effectors to the cytoplasm of host cells that disrupt their metabolic balance, such as interfering with glucose metabolism, promoting lipid droplets formation, altering amino acid profiles and mitochondrial morphology, and reducing ROS levels, to ensure bacterial intracellular survival.

Transthyretin (TTR) is a vertebrate-exclusive transport protein that plays a key role in binding and distributing thyroid hormones. However, its evolutionary origin lies in the duplication of the gene that encoding the enzyme 5-hydroxyisourate hydrolase (HIUase), which is involved in uric acid metabolism. Unlike TTR, HIUase is ubiquitous in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, with the exception of hominids.
