This research aimed to investigate the ultrafiltration of water from emulsified oily wastewater through the application of surface-functionalized ceramic membrane to enhance its water permeability based on optimized parameters using a cross-flow filtration system. The interactive effects of feed concentration (10-1000 ppm), pH (4-10), and pressure (0-3 bar) on the water flux and oil rejection were investigated. Central composite design (CCD) from response surface methodology (RSM) was employed for statistical analysis, modeling, and optimization of operating conditions. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) results showed that the oil rejection and water flux models were significant with -values of 0.0001 and 0.0075, respectively. In addition, good correlation coefficients of 0.997 and 0.863 were obtained for the oil rejection and water flux models, respectively. The optimum conditions for pressure, pH, and feed concentration were found to be 1.5 bar, pH 8.97, and 10 ppm, respectively with water flux and oil rejection maintained at 152 L/m·h and 98.72%, respectively. Hence, the functionalized ultrafiltration ceramic membrane enables the separation efficiency of the emulsified oil in water to be achieved.

The circumstellar liquid-water habitable zone guides our search for potentially inhabited exoplanets but remains observationally untested. We show that the inner edge of the habitable zone can now be mapped among exoplanets using their lack of surface water, which, unlike the presence of water, can be unambiguously revealed by atmospheric sulfur species. Using coupled climate-chemistry modeling, we find that the observability of sulfur gases on exoplanets depends critically on the ultraviolet (UV) flux of their host star, a property with wide variation: Most M-dwarfs have a low UV flux and thereby allow the detection of sulfur gases as a tracer of dry planetary surfaces; however, the UV flux of Trappist-1 may be too high for sulfur to disambiguate uninhabitable from habitable surfaces on any of its planets.

Heteropolar two-dimensional materials, including hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), are promising candidates for seawater desalination and osmotic power harvesting, but previous simulation studies have considered bare, unterminated nanopores in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. There is presently a lack of force fields to describe functionalized nanoporous hBN in aqueous media. To address this gap, we conduct density functional theory (DFT)-based ab initio MD simulations of hBN nanopores surrounded by water molecules.

Optical characterization of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) freshly collected from the circumneutral "white water" of the Rio Solimoes revealed that it had lower aromaticity, lower molecular weight, and a greater autochthonous content than DOC from the acidic "black water" of the Rio Negro. The tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), a characid member of the Serrasalmidae, is a model neotropical fish that migrates annually between the two rivers. We analysed ionoregulatory responses of the tambaqui over 24 h in ion-poor water at pH 7.

The radioactive gas radon-222, a fluid and aerosol tracer in Earth's lithosphere and atmosphere, can also reveal subtle rock physics processes in extraterrestrial environments, such as those involving water, but remains poorly constrained in planetary bodies due to the limited number of samples available. Here we measure the effective radium-226 concentration (EC) of six Martian and nine lunar meteorites to derive radon source terms for Martian and lunar rocks. EC values are 0.

As bacterial contamination crises escalate, the development of advanced membranes possessing both high flux and antibacterial properties is of paramount significance for enhancing water sterilization efficiency. Herein, an ultrathin layer of TbPa (an imine-linked covalent organic framework) and nanosized CuO clusters, sequentially deposited onto polyethersulfone membranes, demonstrate exceptional water flux performance, reaching a permeance level of 16000 LHM bar. The deposited TbPa, generating uniformly distributed reduction sites under illumination, facilitates the uniform formation of CuO clusters.
