Fifty strains of Branhamella catarrhalis were examined for susceptibility to sulphamethoxazole, trimethoprim and a combination of the two by determinating minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and fractional inhibitory concentrations (FICs). All strains were susceptible to sulphamethoxazole and resistant to trimethoprim. On the basis of the MIC results it was predicted that greater synergy between sulphamethoxazole and trimethoprim would be observed with approximately equal proportions of each component. The lowest FIC values were obtained with a ratio of 1:1 and the greatest synergy was observed at this ratio with 39 strains (78%). Only seven strains were most synergistically inhibited at the ratio of 20:1 (sulphamethoxazole: trimethoprim) although this ratio was still synergic for most strains. Overall the 1:20 ratio was not synergic.

Background: Nocardia infections are rare infections in immunocompetent patients and occur mostly in immunocompromised individuals. Usually, nocardia affects skin, brain, and lungs, but in disseminated forms, which occurred mostly in immunocompromised patients, it can involve every organ. Nocardia sinusitis is extremely rare as our searches returned only a very few related studies.

A case of corneal opacity caused by atovaquone administration.

Am J Ophthalmol Case Rep

March 2025

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Nagasaki University Hospital, 1-7-1 Sakamoto, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki, 852-8501, Japan.

Purpose: Atovaquone is an alternative drug that is used for the prevention and treatment of pneumonia when the first-line drug, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (ST combination), cannot be used due to side effects. However, atovaquone is known to cause ocular side effects including oculomucocutaneous syndrome and vortex keratopathy. In this report, we describe a patient who developed bilateral white granular diffuse corneal opacity that extended from the corneal sub-epithelium to the stroma after continuous oral atovaquone administration for 14 months.

Background: Antibiomania is the manifestation of manic symptoms secondary to taking an antibiotic, which is a rare side effect. In these cases, the antibiotics most often incriminated are macrolides and quinolones, but to our knowledge, there are no published cases of antibiomania secondary to cotrimoxazole. Furthermore, we also provide an update of pharmacovigilance data concerning antibiomania through a search of the World Health Organization (WHO) database.

Triple-drug antibiotic therapy for disseminated nocardial abscess in the mediastinum and brain of an immunocompetent patient: a case report.

BMC Infect Dis

January 2025

Department of Oncology, General Hospital of Western Theatre Command, No. 270, Tianhui Road, Rongdu Avenue, Jinniu District, Chengdu, Sichuan, 610000, People's Republic of China.

Background: Nocardia are widely present in nature and considered opportunistic pathogens. They can result in hematogenous spread infection through the ruptured skin or respiratory tract when the host's immune system is compromised. Currently, 119 species of Nocardia have been identified, with 54 capable of causing infections in humans.

The irrational use of antimicrobials has led to the emergence of resistance, impacting not only pathogenic bacteria but also commensal bacteria. Resistance against colistin, a last-resort antibiotic, mediated by globally disseminated plasmid-borne mobile colistin resistance () genes, has raised significant global concerns. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial resistance patterns of colistin-resistant () and mobilised colistin resistance ( 1-5) genes from broiler meat.
