Spontaneous Multiple Arterial Dissection in a COVID-19-Positive Decedent.

Published: March 2022

Spontaneous multiple arterial dissection (SMAD) is a rarely reported phenomenon and has been previously linked to connective tissue diseases and specifically the genetic mutations in SMAD3 and COL3A1. Herein we describe a case of SMAD with scattered thrombi in a COVID-19-positive patient with a history of unspecified mitochondrial myopathy. Vasculopathy involved the splenic artery, inferior mesenteric artery, internal mammary arteries, omental arteries, mesenteric arteries, and small renal arteries. Dissections were confirmed by histology in the splenic artery, inferior mesenteric artery, and bilateral renal medullary arteries. Genetic studies were done to rule out SMAD3 and COL3A1 mutations. Because the Smad3 protein has been previously implicated in COVID-19-associated tissue fibrosis, it may play a role in endothelial dysfunction as well.

Constructing well-dispersed active phase spontaneous redox for electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia.

Chem Commun (Camb)

January 2025

Graphene Composite Research Center, College of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, 518060, P. R. China.

In this study, a distinctive multiple core-shell structure of Co nanoparticles inserted into N-doped carbon dodecahedron@Co hydroxide (Co/NCD@Co(OH)) was synthesized a spontaneous redox reaction between metallic Co and NO, ultimately materializing the fine dispersion and exposure of the active sites. The electronic interaction existing between the Co/NCD core and the Co(OH) shell brings a synergistic effect, conspicuously lessens the overpotential, and reinforces the yield-rate and faradaic efficiency of NH for electrochemical nitrate-ammonia conversion. This study underlines the spontaneous redox between the catalysts and substrate, rendering it as a synthetic strategy for designing genuine and well-dispersed active sites.

NLRX1 limits inflammatory neurodegeneration in the anterior visual pathway.

J Neuroinflammation

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Division of Neuroimmunology, School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, 21287, USA.

Chronic innate immune activation in the central nervous system (CNS) significantly contributes to neurodegeneration in progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Using multiple experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) models, we discovered that NLRX1 protects neurons in the anterior visual pathway from inflammatory neurodegeneration. We quantified retinal ganglion cell (RGC) density and optic nerve axonal degeneration, gliosis, and T-cell infiltration in Nlrx1 and wild-type (WT) EAE mice and found increased RGC loss and axonal injury in Nlrx1 mice compared to WT mice in both active immunization EAE and spontaneous opticospinal encephalomyelitis (OSE) models.

In eukaryotes, DNA achieves a highly compact structure primarily due to its winding around the histone cores. The nature wrapping of DNA around histone core form a 1.7 left-handed superhelical turns, contributing to negative supercoiling in chromatin.

Background: This article focuses on the effect of body mass index (BMI) on cardiac structure and function in cases with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). Only a few articles have investigated the relationship between BMI and the incidence of left atrial thrombus (LAT) or spontaneous echo contrast (SEC) in cases with NVAF.

Methods: This single-center retrospective study was conducted at The First People's Hospital of Changzhou.

Background: Complicated crown-root fracture (CRF) involves severe injury to the crown, root, and pulp, and may be accompanied by multiple root fractures. The loss of a tooth has lifelong consequences for children and teenagers, but the maintenance of pulp health and the calcific healing of multiple root fractures are rarely reported in the literature.

Case Summary: This case reports healing of a permanent tooth with complicated crown-root and additional root fractures, in which pulp health was maintained.
