After surgery, around 35% of patients experience problems of excessive scarring, causing disfiguring and impaired function. An incision placed in the wrong direction causes unnecessary skin tension on the wound, resulting in increased collagen disposition and potentially hypertrophic scars. Currently, skin tension lines are used for incision planning. However, these lines are not universal and are a static representation of the skin tension that is in fact under influence of muscle action. By designing a new skin force measurement device the authors intend to make research on dynamic skin characteristics possible and to objectify incision planning and excision closure planning. The device applies a known compressive force to the skin in standardized directions and measures the displacement of the skin. This allows users to measure the skin reaction force in response to compression and to determine the optimal incision line or best wound closure direction. The device has an accuracy of 96% and a sensitivity of < 0.01 mm. It is compact, works non-invasively and standardizes measurement directions and is therefore an improvement over previously designed skin tensiometers.

Natural skin tension plays an important role during surgical procedures and during the healing process. Existing studies performed ex vivo give only a qualitative map of skin tension. In this study, we propose a quantitative characterization of skin tension in vivo using a new model.

Axillary breasts are a common entity with a reported incidence of 2 to 6% in women and 1 to 3% in men. They are more common amongst Asians than Caucasians, namely amongst South East Asians and Indians, with the highest incidence amongst Japanese. While modalities like CoolScupting™, Kybella™ injections, and BodyTite™ have been used by surgeons for management of axillary breasts, the most effective treatment for this condition remains surgical management involving a combination of liposuction of the axillary breast with excision of the gland and skin.

Background: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) comprises a group of genetically and clinically heterogeneous diseases characterized by skin fragility and blistering. EB is incurable, and treatment consists of preventing blisters in addition to painful and time consuming skin care, often performed by the parents, in addition to monitoring other symptoms in cases of severe EB.
Results: The purpose of this study was to explore parental experiences of caring for a child with EB.

Mitochondrial oxygen tension (MitoPO2) is a promising novel non-invasive bedside marker of circulatory shock and is associated with organ failure. The measurement of mitoPO2 requires the topical application of 5-aminolevulinc acid (ALA) to induce sufficient concentrations of the fluorescent protein protoporphyrin-IX within (epi)dermal cells. Currently, its clinical potential in guiding resuscitation therapies is limited by the long induction time prior to obtaining a reliable measurement signal.

Aerogel fibers uniting characteristics of both aerogels (lightweight and porosity) and fibers (flexibility and wearability) exhibit a great potential for the production of the next generation of thermal protection textiles; still, the complex drying procedures and mechanical brittleness remain the main obstacles toward further exploitation. Herein, flexible and robust aramid nanofiber aerogel fibers (ANAFs) are scalably prepared by continuous wet-spinning coupled with fast air-drying. This synthesis involves calcium ions (Ca⁺) cross-linking and solvent displacement by low surface tension solvents, to enhance skeleton strength and reduce the capillary force during evaporation, respectively, thus minimizing shrinkage to 29.
