Overcoming Geographic Barriers: Surgical Care in Rural Populations.

Clin Colon Rectal Surg

January 2025

Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

This chapter examines the challenges rural Americans face in accessing surgical care, which is characterized by geographical barriers, a decreasing surgical workforce, and unique patient factors. The widening health care disparity between rural and urban residents highlights the need for comprehensive strategies to improve surgical care delivery to rural areas. Focusing on colorectal care delivery, encompassing the spectrum of common and complex care, exemplifies opportunities to optimize care delivery for rural populations.

Label-Free SERS Analysis of Biological and Physical Information Heterogeneity of Nanoscale Extracellular Vesicle by Matching Specific Sizes of Enhanced Particles.

Small

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Biomedical Information Engineering of Ministry of Education, School of Life Science and Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, Shaanxi, 710049, China.

The heterogeneity of extracellular vesicles (EVs) surface information represents different functions, which is neglected in previous studies. In this study, a label-free SERS analysis approach is demonstrated to study fundamental EV biological and physical information heterogeneity by matching specific sizes of nano-enhanced particles. This strategy reveals informative, comprehensive, and high-quality SERS spectra of the overall exosome surface, and effectively circumvents the key information loss caused by the spatial resistance of NPs binding to the 293 exosomes' concave structure.

Introduction: Infantile hypotonia with psychomotor retardation and characteristic facies-1 (IHPRF1, MIM#615419) is a rare, birth onset, autosomal recessive disorder caused by homozygous or compound heterozygous truncating variants in gene (MIM#611549) resulting in a loss-of-function effect.

Methods: We enrolled a new IHPRF1 patients' cohort in the framework of an international multicentric collaboration study. Using specialized pathogenicity predictors and structural analyses, we assessed the mechanistic consequences of the deleterious variants retrieved on NALCN structure and function.

The conversion of CO into methanol depicts one of the most promising emerging renewable routes for the chemical and biotech industry. Under this regard, native methylotrophs have a large potential for converting methanol into value-added products but require targeted engineering approaches to enhance their performances and to widen their product spectrum. Here we use a systems-based approach to analyze and engineer M.

2D Conjugated Metal-Organic Frameworks for New Generation Flexible Multicolor Electrochromic Devices.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore, 117574, Republic of Singapore.

There has been considerable interest in 2D conductive conjugated MOFs (2D c-MOFs) for their potential applications in sensors, opto-electronics, catalysis, and energy storage, owing to their ultra-high specific surface area, relatively high electrical conductivity, and tunable pore channel sizes for ion/charge diffusion/adsorption. The unique advantages brought by systematic tunings in the metal nodes and organic ligands enable the creation of highly accessible and remarkable structures with diverse chemical and physical behaviors. While the 2D c-MOFs are being explored for the rapid widening spectrum of applications, in this work, the great potential of multicolor transitions and functional properties of these 2D c-MOFs are examined for the new generation of flexible multicolor electrochromic devices (FMEDs).
