We compared case definitions for suspected, probable, and confirmed coronavirus disease (COVID-19), as well as diagnostic testing criteria, used in the 25 countries with the highest reported case counts as of October 1, 2020. Of the identified countries, 56% followed World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for using a combination of clinical and epidemiologic criteria as part of the suspected case definition. A total of 75% of identified countries followed WHO recommendations on using clinical, epidemiologic, and diagnostic criteria for probable cases; 72% followed WHO recommendations to use PCR testing to confirm COVID-19. Finally, 64% of countries used testing eligibility criteria at least as permissive as WHO. We observed marked heterogeneity in testing eligibility requirements and in how countries define a COVID-19 case. This heterogeneity affects the ability to compare case counts, transmission, and vaccine effectiveness, as well as estimates derived from case surveillance data across countries.

The applause sign (AS) is a recognized phenomenon observed in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and other neurological conditions where individuals produce over three claps following a request to clap only thrice after a demonstration. In this study, we introduced a novel linguistic phenomenon termed the oral applause sign (OAS) associated with the AS. The OAS is characterized by increased repetition counts of Japanese repetitive onomatopoeic words, such as uttering "pata-pata-pata" instead of the expected "pata-pata.

Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) are widely used by reproductive-aged women. Current data suggest that long-term use of COCs can suppress ovarian reserve markers, including anti-mullerian hormone and antral follicle count, which may negatively impact ovarian response and oocyte yield in patients undergoing planned oocyte cryopreservation to preserve future reproductive potential. Discontinuation of COCs can improve ovarian stimulation outcomes, though the ideal duration of cessation is unknown.

Background: Congenital neutropenia is a primary immunodeficiency characterized by quantitative anomalies in neutrophil counts. It is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation stands as a potential therapeutic intervention; nevertheless, graft-versus-host disease emerges as a main complication.

Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Among the various types of end-organ damage associated with sepsis, hepatic injury is linked to significantly higher mortality rates compared to dysfunction in other organ systems. This study aimed to investigate potential biomarkers of hepatic injury in sepsis patients through a multi-center, case-control approach.

Background: Several viruses have been linked to Alzheimer disease (AD) by independent lines of evidence.
Method: Whole genome and whole exome sequences (WGS/WES) derived from brain (3,404 AD cases, 894 controls) and blood (15,612 AD cases, 24,544 controls) obtained from European ancestry (EU), African American (AA), Mexican (HMX), South Asian Indian (IND), and Caribbean Hispanic (CH) participants of the Alzheimer's Disease Sequencing Project (ADSP) and 276 AD cases 3,584 controls (all EU) from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) that did not align to the human reference genome were aligned to viral reference genomes. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) for viral DNA load was conducted using PLINK software and regression models with covariates for sex, age, ancestry principal components, and tissue source.
