Purpose: To develop fixative agents for high-field MRI with suitable dielectric properties and measure MR properties in immersion-fixed brain tissue.

Methods: Dielectric properties of formalin-based agents were assessed (100 MHz-4.5 GHz), and four candidate fixatives with/without polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and different salt concentrations were formulated. B field and MR properties (T , , R , , and magnetic susceptibility [QSM]) were observed in white and gray matter of pig brain samples during 0.5-35 days of immersion fixation. The kinetics were fitted using exponential functions. The immersion time required to reach maximum values at different tissue depths was used to estimate the Medawar coefficient for fixative penetration. The effect of replacing the fixatives with Fluoroinert and phosphate-buffered saline as embedding media was also evaluated.

Results: The dielectric properties of formalin were nonlinearly modified by increasing amounts of additives. With 5% PVP and 0.04% NaCl, the dielectric properties and B field reflected in vivo conditions. The highest B values were found in white matter with PVP and varied significantly with tissue depth and embedding media, but not with immersion time. The MR properties depended on PVP yielding lower T , higher , more paramagnetic QSM values, and a lower Medawar coefficient (0.9 ; without PVP: 1.5). Regardless of fixative, switching to phosphate-buffered saline as embedder caused a paramagnetic shift in QSM and decreased that progressed during 1 month of storage, whereas no differences were found with Fluorinert.

Conclusion: In vivo-like B fields can be achieved in formalin fixatives using PVP and a low salt concentration, yielding lower T , higher , and more paramagnetic QSM than without additives. The kinetics of allowed estimation of fixative tissue penetration.

Manipulating the optical landscape of single quantum dots (QDs) is essential to increase the emitted photon output, enhancing their performance as chemical sensors and single-photon sources. Micro-optical structures are typically used for this task, with the drawback of a large size compared to the embedded single emitters. Nanophotonic architectures hold the promise to modify dramatically the emission properties of QDs, boosting light-matter interactions at the nanoscale, in ultracompact devices.

Soft and stretchable strain sensors are crucial for applications in human-machine interfaces, flexible robotics, and electronic skin. Among these, capacitive strain sensors are widely used and studied; however, they face challenges due to material and structural constraints, such as low baseline capacitance and susceptibility to external interference, which result in low signal-to-noise ratios and poor stability. To address these issues, we propose a U-shaped electrode flexible strain sensor based on liquid metal elastomer (LME).

Electrically Switchable Multi-Stable Topological States Enabled by Surface-Induced Frustration in Nematic Liquid Crystal Cells.

In liquid crystal (LC) cells, the surface patterning directs the self-assembly of the uniaxial building blocks in the bulk, enabling the design of stimuli-response optical devices with various functionalities. The combination of different anchoring patterns at both substrates can lead to surface induced frustration, preventing a purely planar and defect-free configuration. In cells with crossed assembly of rotating anchoring patterns, elastic deformations allow to obtain a defect-free bulk configuration, but an electrical stimulus can induce disclination lines.

In this paper, we demonstrate that torsional surface elastic waves can propagate along the curved surface of a metamaterial elastic rod (cylinder) embedded in a conventional elastic medium. The crucial parameter of the metamaterial rod is its elastic compliance s44(1)ω, which varies as a function of frequency ω analogously to the dielectric function εω in Drude's model of metals. As a consequence, the elastic compliance s44(1)ω can take negative values s44(1)ω<0 as a function of frequency ω.

Quantifying the Impact of Soil Moisture Sensor Measurements in Determining Green Stormwater Infrastructure Performance.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Villanova University, 800 Lancaster Avenue, Villanova, PA 19085, USA.

The ability to track moisture content using soil moisture sensors in green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) systems allows us to understand the system's water management capacity and recovery. Soil moisture sensors have been used to quantify infiltration and evapotranspiration in GSI practices both preceding, during, and following storm events. Although useful, soil-specific calibration is often needed for soil moisture sensors, as small measurement variations can result in misinterpretation of the water budget and associated GSI performance.
