Broadening the absorption of light to the near-infrared (NIR) region is important in photocatalysis to achieve efficient solar-to-fuel conversion. NIR-responsive photocatalysts that can utilize diffusive solar energy are attractive for alleviating the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Over the past few years, considerable progress on the component and structural design of NIR-responsive photocatalysts have been reported. This study aims to systematically summarize recent progress toward the material design and mechanism optimization of NIR-responsive photocatalysts in this area. Depending on the main strategies for harvesting NIR photons, NIR-responsive photocatalysts can be categorized as direct NIR-light photocatalysts, indirect NIR-light photocatalysts, and photothermal photocatalysts. Furthermore, the construction and application of different NIR-responsive photocatalytic systems are summarized. Conclusions and perspectives are presented to further explore the potential of NIR-responsive photocatalysts in this field.

Developing ultraviolet (UV), visible (Vis) and near-infrared (NIR) responsive photocatalysts for Cr(VI) reduction is valuable. Herein, a 0-dimensional/1-dimensional (0D/1D) S-scheme AgS/BiSI hetero-structured photocatalyst was successfully synthesized, which displays greatly enhanced Cr(VI) removal activity either under UV, Vis or NIR light irradiation. In-situ characterization technique and theoretical calculation confirm that an internal electric field (IEF), directing from AgS to BiSI, exists between the interface, which facilitates the spatial-oriented separation of photoirradiated carriers.

Photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (PNRR) holds immense promise for sustainable ammonia (NH) synthesis. However, few photocatalysts can utilize NIR light that carries over 50% of the solar energy for NH production with high performance. Herein, a dual NIR-responsive S-scheme ZnCoS/FeS heterojunction photocatalyst is designed with asymmetric adsorption sites and excellent PNRR performance.

School of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, Ningbo University of Technology, 201 Fenghua Road, Jiangbei, Ningbo, Zhejiang 315211, China.

Photothermal catalysis combines the advantages of photocatalysis and thermal activation, which provides a new research angle for CO catalytic reduction. In this study, Black carbon nitride with a three-dimensional (3D) pinecone-shaped structure (BPCN) was prepared by a simple solvothermal method using melamine as a precursor without the aid of a template. Lanthanum oxide doping on the BPCN catalysts (BPCN-La) was achieved by ultrasonic impregnation.

Near-infrared (NIR) light, accounting for approximately 50 % of solar light, cannot directly excite photocatalytic reactions due to its lower energy, which severely restricts the photocatalytic solar energy conversion efficiency and hinders the application of photocatalysis. To overcome this dilemma, some viable strategies have been proposed to harness NIR light for enhancing photocatalytic performance based on material structure, composition, and function designs, and obvious progresses have been witnessed. In this review, the basic principles and representative advances in photocatalyst heterojunction designs (including p-n junctions, S-scheme, Z-scheme, and type-ІІ heterojunctions), photocatalyst composition and function designs (such as preparing rare earth element doped upconversion photocatalysts, rare earth upconversion photocatalytic hybrids and triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion photocatalytic composites), and photothermal-photocatalytic bifunction designs for NIR light utilization are exclusively scrutinized.
