The three-dimensional (3D) printing technology combined with bone tissue engineering has become one of the major methods for mandibular reconstruction. However, the key factor retarding mandible reconstruction is the barrier of understanding and achieving the complex 3D gridwork formed by the trabeculae. This study innovatively constructed a low-temperature 3D printing silk fibroin/collagen/hydroxyapatite (SF/COL/HA) composite scaffold with a stable structure and remarkable biocompatibility. We designed three kinds of six-layer scaffolds with mixed fiber cross-angle structures (FCAS) of [0°/90°/0°/90°/0°/90°], [0°/45°/90°/135°/180°/225°] and [0°/30°/60°/90°/120°/150°]. Material properties of these scaffolds such as porosity, water absorption rate, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and compression performance were detected. Then, the MC3T3-E1 cells were seeded on these scaffolds and the adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation were investigated. To be more convincing, the same experiments were performed on another polycaprolactone/hydroxyapatite scaffold. The results suggested that the changes of FCAS affected the mechanical properties of 3D printed scaffolds and performance of seeded cells. Besides, the 90° FCAS significantly enhanced the compressive modulus in two groups and were more conducive to the cell proliferation and osteogenesis, which provided evidence for exploring the influence of FCAS on the properties of scaffolds and the application of two composite scaffolds in tissue regeneration.

Macrostructural control of stress distribution and microstructural influence on crack propagation is one of the strategies for obtaining high mechanical properties in stag beetle upper jaws. The maximum bending fracture force of the stag beetle upper jaw is approximately 154, 000 times the weight of the upper jaw. Here, we explore the macro and micro-structural characteristics of two stag beetle upper jaws and reveal the resulting differences in mechanical properties and enhancement mechanisms.

The charge plays an important role in cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) self-assembly to form liquid crystal structures, which has rarely been systematically explored. In this work, a novel technique combining atomic force microscopy force and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations was addressed for the first time to systematically investigate the differences in the CNC self-assembly caused by external positive and negative charges at the microscopic level, wherein sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) and chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) were used as external positive and negative charge additives, respectively. The results show that although the two additives both make the color of CNC films shift blue and eventually disappear, their regulatory mechanisms are, respectively, related to the extrusion of CNC particles by PAAS and the reduction in CNC surface charge by COS.

A tapered fiber with a depressed-index outer ring is fabricated and dispersion engineered to generate a widely tunable (1250-1650 nm) fundamental-mode leakage loss with a high cutoff slope (-1.2 dB/nm) and a high attenuation for stop band (>50 dB) by modification of both waveguide and material dispersions. The higher cutoff slope is achieved with a larger cross angle between the two refractive index dispersion curves of the tapered fiber and surrounding optical liquids through the use of depressed-index outer ring structures in double-cladding fibers.

We demonstrate tunable highly wavelength-selective filter based on a 2 x 2 asymmetric side-polished fiber coupler with dispersive interlayer in one of the coupling arms. The asymmetric fiber coupler is made of two side-polished fibers using identical single-mode fibers and one of the polished fibers is further chemically etched at the central evanescent coupling region to gain closer to the core. An optical liquid with different dispersion characteristics than that of silica fiber is used to fill up the etched hollow and therefore the propagation constant for the polished fiber with dispersive liquid becomes more dispersive and crosses with that of another untreated polished fiber.
