Paraquat dichloride is a widely used, highly toxic chemical herbicide and a significant cause of fatal poisonings. Toxicity is thought to be secondary to generation of reactive oxygen species. Hours after exposure, patients may experience signs and symptoms ranging from nausea to multisystem organ failure. To mitigate complications and death, immunosuppression with cyclophosphamide and corticosteroid-based therapies has shown to be an effective option in limited studies. Our objective is to report our center's experience treating patients that had been exposed to paraquat over a 2-day period. Patients were identified using our Institutional Burn Center registry and linked to the clinical and administrative data. Demographics, length of stay (LOS), costs, and mortality were evaluated. There were nine patients admitted from the exposure. All were male. All survived. Eight were undocumented migrant farmers. The average age was 36 years (25-59 years). The average LOS was 3.3 days (2-5 days). Seventy-eight percent had cutaneous injury, but only one required debridement and placement of a skin substitute. Thirty-three percent complained of continued shortness of breath after discharge. Average total hospital cost was $28,131 ($9,500-$51,000). Paraquat is a highly toxic herbicide and exposure can be fatal if not treated promptly. Immediate decontamination and repeated pulse therapy with cyclophosphamide and methylprednisolone may be life-saving.

Background: Periodontitis is not always satisfactorily treated with conventional scaling and root planing, and adjunctive use of antibiotics is required in clinical practice. Therefore, it is important for clinicians to understand the diversity and the antibiotic resistance of subgingival microbiota when exposed to different antibiotics.
Materials And Methods: In this study, subgingival plaques were collected from 10 periodontitis patients and 11 periodontally healthy volunteers, and their microbiota response to selective pressure of four antibiotics (amoxicillin, metronidazole, clindamycin, and tetracycline) were evaluated through 16S rRNA gene amplicon and metagenomic sequencing analysis.

Introduction: Several aspects of the involvement of HPV in the pathogenesis of HPV-associated diseases remain poorly understood including mechanistic aspects of infection and the question of why the majority of HPV-positive HNSCC-patients are non-smokers, whereas HPV-negatives are smokers. Our previous research, based on 1,100 patient samples, hypothesized an explanation for this phenomenon: Smoking induces upregulation of a mucosal protective protein (SLPI), which competes with HPV for binding to Annexin A2 (AnxA2), pivotal for HPV cell entry. Here we investigate the mechanistic aspects of our hypothesis using transfection assays.

Despite the evident benefits of spectral computed tomography (CT) in delivering qualitative imaging superior to that of conventional CT in adults, its application in pediatric diagnostic imaging is still relatively limited due to various reasons, including design limitations and radiation dose considerations. The use of specialized K-edge filters, in conjunction with other spectral technologies, has been demonstrated to improve spectral quantification accuracy. X-ray flux limitations generally pose challenges in these concepts when applied to adults.
