Due to their various applications, metal oxides are of high interest for fundamental research and commercial usage. Per applications as catalysts or electrochemical devices, the tailored design of metal oxides featuring a high specific surface area and additional functionalities is of the utmost importance for the performance of the resulting materials. We report a new method for preparing free-standing films consisting of hierarchically porous metal oxides (titanium and niobium based) by combining emulsion polymerization and shear-induced monodisperse particle self-assembly in the presence of sol-gel precursors. After thermal treatment, the resulting porous materials can be used as electrodes in Li-ion batteries. The titanium and niobium sol-gel precursors were partially immobilized to the surface of organic core-interlayer particles featuring hydroxyl groups to obtain hybrid organic-inorganic particles through the melt-shear organization process. Free-standing particle-based films, in analogy to elastomeric opal films and colloidal crystals, can be prepared in a convenient one-step preparation process. After thermal treatment, ordered pores are obtained, while the pristine metal oxide precursor shell can be converted to the (mixed) metal oxide matrix. Heat treatment under CO leads to mixed-TiNb oxide/carbon hybrid materials. The highly porous derivative structure enhances electrolyte permeation. When tested as Li-ion battery electrodes, it shows a specific capacity of 335 mAh·g at a rate of 10 mA·g. After 1000 cycles at 250 mA·g, the electrodes still provided a specific capacity of 191 mAh·g.

The diversity and heterogeneity of biomarkers has made the development of general methods for single-step quantification of analytes difficult. For individual biomarkers, electrochemical methods that detect a conformational change in an affinity binder upon analyte binding have shown promise. However, because the conformational change must operate within a nanometer-scale working distance, an entirely new sensor, with a unique conformational change, must be developed for each analyte.

Electron transfer in polysaccharide monooxygenase catalysis.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720.

Polysaccharide monooxygenase (PMO) catalysis involves the chemically difficult hydroxylation of unactivated C-H bonds in carbohydrates. The reaction requires reducing equivalents and will utilize either oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as a cosubstrate. Two key mechanistic questions are addressed here: 1) How does the enzyme regulate the timely and tightly controlled electron delivery to the mononuclear copper active site, especially when bound substrate occludes the active site? and 2) How does this electron delivery differ when utilizing oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as a cosubstrate? Using a computational approach, potential paths of electron transfer (ET) to the active site copper ion were identified in a representative AA9 family PMO from (PMO9E).

ANAC044 orchestrates mitochondrial stress signaling to trigger iron-induced stem cell death in root meristems.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Environment Remediation and Ecological Health, Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Agricultural Resources and Environment, College of Environmental and Resource Sciences, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310058, China.

While iron (Fe) is essential for life and plays important roles for almost all growth related processes, it can trigger cell death in both animals and plants. However, the underlying mechanisms for Fe-induced cell death in plants remain largely unknown. S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) has previously been reported to regulate nitric oxide homeostasis to prevent Fe-induced cell death within root meristems.

This study investigates the geochemical characteristics of rare earth elements (REEs) in highland karstic bauxite deposits located in the Sierra de Bahoruco, Pedernales Province, Dominican Republic. These deposits, formed through intense weathering of volcanic material, represent a potentially valuable REE resource for the nation. Surface and subsurface soil samples were analyzed using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) and a NixPro 2 color sensor validated with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).

Large enhancement of ferroelectric properties of perovskite oxides via nitrogen incorporation.

Sci Adv

State Key Laboratory of Advanced Welding and Joining of Materials and Structures, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen 518055, China.

Perovskite oxides have a wide variety of physical properties that make them promising candidates for versatile technological applications including nonvolatile memory and logic devices. Chemical tuning of those properties has been achieved, to the greatest extent, by cation-site substitution, while anion substitution is much less explored due to the difficulty in synthesizing high-quality, mixed-anion compounds. Here, nitrogen-incorporated BaTiO thin films have been synthesized by reactive pulsed-laser deposition in a nitrogen growth atmosphere.
