Background: Defects of incretin hormones and incretin effect may be underlying mechanisms of abnormal glucose metabolism in youth.
Objective: To assess incretin hormone dynamics during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and incretin effect in obese children with prediabetes in comparison with those with normal glucose tolerance (NGT).
Methods: Overweight and obese children were enrolled and classified according to OGTT results as NGT and prediabetes. Insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion, incretin hormone concentrations during OGTT; and incretin effect derived from OGTT and intravenous glucose tolerance test were determined and compared between NGT and prediabetes groups.
Results: Sixty-three patients (43 NGT and 20 prediabetes) were enrolled. Their median (interquartile range) age was 12.5 (11.1, 13.8) years. Peak glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) was demonstrated at 30 min during OGTT and was higher in the prediabetes group (49.2 [35.6, 63.6] versus 36.5 [27.6, 44.2] pmol/L, p = 0.009). However, incremental areas under the curves (iAUCs) of GLP-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) were not different between the two groups. There was no difference in incretin effect between NGT and prediabetes (NGT: 66.5% [60.2%, 77.5%] vs. prediabetes: 70.0% [61.5%, 75.0%], p = 0.645). Incretin effect had positive correlations with iAUCs of both GLP-1 and GIP (GLP-1: r = 0.40, p = 0.004 and GIP: r = 0.37, p = 0.009).
Conclusions: Comparing between obese children with prediabetes and NGT, there were no differences in overall incretin hormone changes during OGTT and incretin effect. Incretin effect was positively correlated with iAUCs of GLP-1 and GIP.

Background And Aims: Childhood obesity leads to significant health risks, emphasizing the critical need for effective preventive measures during the preschool years. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies on overweight and obesity among preschool children in Hainan Island, China's largest free-trade zone. Our study assessed the prevalence of overweight and obesity among preschool children across Hainan Island using Chinese, World Health Organization (WHO), and International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) criteria.

Objective: This study analyzed the changes in blood glucose and lipid metabolism levels in children with central precocious puberty (CPP) and the correlation between CPP and obesity.
Methods: In total, 88 children with CPP aged 6-10 years who were admitted to our hospital between January 2023 and June 2024 (the CPP group), and 88 children without CPP in the same age group who received health check-ups (the non-CPP group) were retrospectively enrolled in this study. General data [gender, age, bone age, and body mass index (BMI)] were collected.

Purpose: is a Gram-negative bacterium that is associated with peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and gastric cancer. However, studies on the endoscopic finding and factors related to infection in children are lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with infection in children with dyspepsia.

Introduction: The global prevalence of overweight and obesity has reached epidemic proportions amongst children and adolescents, with approximately one third of children in Europe being overweight or obese. There is a higher likelihood for overweight and obesity reported for vulnerable groups of children, also known as children in need. As there is currently no knowledge of the best practice interventions for improving nutrition and physical activity habits amongst these vulnerable groups, the aim of this rapid review was to examine evidence that focused on best practice interventions to tackle overweight and obesity in children in need in Greece and/or other European countries.

Background: Ultra-processed products (UPPs), high in sugar, fat and sodium, contribute to increasing burdens of obesity and non-communicable diseases in South Africa (SA). Increased consumption and acceptability of UPPs is driven, in part by aggressive marketing. Front of package labelling laws, particularly warning labels (WLs) coupled with marketing restrictions, have been recommended to improve consumer awareness of unhealthy products, incentivise reformulation and underpin other interventions.
