Systematists have questioned the distinction between characters and character states and their alignment with the traditional concept of homology. Previous definitions for character and character state show surprising variation. Here it is concluded that characters are simply features expressed as independent variables and character states the mutually exclusive conditions of a character. Together, characters and character states compose what are here termed character statements. Character statements are composed of only four fundamental functional components here identified as locator, variable, variable qualifier, and character state, and these components exist in only two patterns, neomorphic and transformational. Several controversies in character coding and the use of "absent" as a character state are understood here as a consequence of incomplete character statements and the inappropriate mixing of neomorphic and transformational character statements. Only a few logically complete patterns for morphological character data exist; their adoption promises to greatly reduce current variability in character data between analyses.

Research progress on the performance of expandable systems for long-term gastric retention.

Acta Biomater

January 2025

Department of Engineering Mechanics, State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis, Optimization and CAE Software for Industrial Equipment, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China.

Gastroretentive systems have gained attention due to their prolonged retention time in the human body, and they have the potential to improve treatment effects, simplify treatment regimens, and improve patient compliance. Among these systems, expandable gastroretentive systems (EGRSs) have emerged as an important type of carrier that can reside in the stomach for a desired period through on-demand expansion for drug delivery, obesity intervention, and medical diagnosis. As the physiological environment significantly influences the performance of EGRSs, here, the physiological factors such as the stomach's physiological structure and activity pattern, and the character of gastric juice are summarized.

In literate adults, an area along the left posterior fusiform gyrus that is often referred to as the "visual word form area" (VWFA) responds particularly strongly to written characters compared to other visually similar stimuli. Theoretical accounts differ in whether they attribute the strong left-lateralization of the VWFA to a left-hemisphere bias towards visual features used in script, to competition of visual word form processing with that of other visual stimuli processed in the same general cortical territory (especially faces), or to the well-established left-lateralization of the language system. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to test the last hypothesis by investigating lateralization of the VWFA in participants (male and female) who have right-hemisphere language due to a large left-hemisphere perinatal stroke.

A hybrid meta on-top functional for multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Chemical Theory Center, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN 55455-0431.

Multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT) was proposed a decade ago, but it is still in the early stage of density functional development. MC-PDFT uses functionals that are called on-top functionals; they depend on the density and the on-top pair density. Most MC-PDFT calculations to date have been unoptimized translations of generalized gradient approximations (GGAs) of Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT).

Witnessing rejection against one's group can have similar impacts on psychological distress and aggression as experiencing rejection personally. In this study, we investigated the neural activity patterns of group rejection and whether they resemble those of personal-level rejection. We first identified the neural correlates of social rejection (exclusion based on negative attention) compared with ostracism (exclusion based on lack of social connection) and then compared group-level to personal-level rejection.

Paris yunnanensis, also named as Rhizoma Paridis in the Chinese Pharmacopeia, is a perennial Chinese medicinal herb commonly grown in Southwest China. However, several viruses have been found infecting this plant in recent years. Using high-throughput sequencing (HTS) and Sanger sequencing, this study obtained the complete genome sequences of three capillovirus isolates and one potyvirus isolate.
