Vaccine humanity.

J Am Pharm Assoc (2003)

Published: January 2022

Vaccines to help prevent COVID-19 disease have evoked myriad human emotions. Attitudes of the public toward vaccination can be grouped into hundreds of categories. Pharmacists need to recognize the many elements of what may be termed "vaccine humanity," a complex tangle of human responses. Vaccine humanity applies to all vaccines, not just COVID-19 vaccines. Many of the emotions (pro and con) exhibited toward COVID-19 vaccines were also expressed (pro and con) with Edward Jenner's smallpox vaccine in the 1800s. New disease, new vaccines, same humanity. Human behaviors to seek or decline vaccination typically pivot on several core elements: perceptions of susceptibility to disease, seriousness of the disease, benefits of vaccination, and barriers (e.g., safety concerns, distance, costs, uncertainty). The pharmacist who contributes the time to listen and explain--listen and explain--listen and explain performs a vital clinical service: enabling vaccinations that promote health and prevent disease.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the most important etiologies of acute respiratory infections that cause bronchiolitis in children under 5 years of age. Treatments are expensive, no vaccine is available, and this is an important cause of hospitalization. Costimulatory molecules have been reported to be good inducers of antiviral type 1 immune response.

The introduction of modern Western medicine in the late 19th century, notably through vaccination initiatives, marked the beginning of governmental involvement in medical licensure, with the licensing of doctors who performed vaccinations. The establishment of the national medical school "Euihakkyo" in 1899 further formalized medical education and licensure, granting graduates the privilege to practice medicine without additional examinations. The enactment of the Regulations on Doctors in 1900 by the Joseon government aimed to define doctor qualifications, including modern and traditional practitioners, comprehensively.

Many transplant programs worldwide are likely to impose vaccine mandates for pediatric solid organ transplant candidates; some already do. Three potential benefits that advocates invoke to justify mandates are improved patient outcomes, efficient organ allocation, and contributions to community protection. We show that none of these benefits can justify mandates.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the crucial role of health sector decision-makers in establishing and evaluating effective treatment and prevention policies. To inform sound decisions, it is essential to simultaneously monitor multiple pandemic characteristics, including transmission rates, infection rates, recovery rates (which indicate treatment efficacy), and fatality rates. This study introduces an innovative application of existing methodologies: the Multivariate Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (MEWMA) and Multivariate Cumulative Sum (MCUSUM) control charts (CCs), used for monitoring the parameters of the Susceptible, Exposed, Infected, Recovered, Death, and Vaccination (SEIRDV) model.
