In 68 patients suffering from acute unilateral vestibular disorders 168 electronystagmograms could be analysed paying special attention to the nystagmographic reactions in the second postrotatory period. When the postrotatorius II was directed to the affected side (in 25% of our cases) this was an indication for an advanced extent of central compensation in the electronystagmogram. There was a good correlation between the postrotatorius II and the other nystagmographic reactions in the per- and postrotatory periods. However, the occurrence of the postrotatorius II agreed neither with the results of the vestibulo-spinal tests (Romberg, Unterberger) nor with the nystagmus findings observed with Frenzel's glasses. In many cases a latent spontaneous nystagmus could be detected with the postrotatorius II. Including the second postrotatory period in the evaluation of the electronystagmograms provides additional information permitting a much better assessment of the extent of central compensation.

Background: It is the subject of this study to investigate the biological effect of the HF radiation produced by the Global System for Mobile Communications-( GSM)-mobile phone on the inner ear with its sensors of the vestibular and auditive systems.
Methods/patients: Thermographic investigations made on various model materials and on the human temporal bone should show whether mobile phone does induce any increases of temperature which would lead to a relevant stimulus for the auditive and vestibular system or not. We carried out video-nystagmographic recordings of 13 subjects, brainstem electric response audiometry of 24 ears, and recordings of distorsion products of otoacoustic emissions of 20 ears.

Based on the absolute values of the different nystagmus reactions, measured after having used the rotational test on 70 healthy subjects, the directional preponderance (DP) was calculated in the present study according to the equation of Jongkees and Philippszoon. It could be shown that a DP of less than +/- 30% can be regarded as a normal standard only if it refers to the summarised nystagmic reaction of the per- and first postrotatory phase (Per+PI) of the test. Depending on the different parameters (frequency, amplitude or slow phase velocity of the nystagmus reactions), higher standard values have to be accepted for the different phases of the rotational test.

In this study the nystagmographic findings of 70 healthy subjects--obtained after having used the rotatory test (modified method of Veits)--are summarised and visualised by means of easily appreciated graphs. In accordance with the recommendations of the ADANO, the test was carried out as a continuous turning of the chair, first clockwise and then counterclockwise, with an accelerating stimulus of 3 degrees/s2 and a sudden stop after a period of constant rotation with a speed of 90 degrees/s (trapezoidal stimulus). This was done for the absolute values of the following nystagmus parameters: frequency, amplitude and slow phase velocity of the nystagmus reaction.

Elderly persons are affected in addition to other findings, by an overall reduction of their bodily and mental reactions. Their sensory ability decreases, such as hearing, vision, smell, and taste. With increasing age disturbances of the balance system occur more frequently, resulting in disequilibrium, vertigo, light-headedness, and falling.

Caloric responses were registered by using water irrigation and balloon irrigation in 40 healthy persons. Nystagmographic registrations were analysed.
