Education to improve knowledge of animal welfare is not a universal component of training for zoo staff, and little is reported about the perspectives of zoo staff on the need for such education. This paper reports results from structured telephone interviews of a diverse sample of eight Chinese and eight European zoo staff about aspects of zoological animal welfare, education and zoological practices. These qualitative data were thematically analyzed and key themes generated. Similar themes emerged across regions: Zoo staff consider professional attributes including motivation and enthusiasm to be important alongside formal training, zoo staff value learning opportunities but don't always feel supported, and contextual information including wild animal ecology was considered important content in zoo animal welfare education.

Zoo professionals and volunteers play essential roles in the wellbeing and conservation of a diverse array of animal species. Despite the growing body of literature revealing the psychological impacts of pet loss, there remains a dearth of information describing the experience of animal loss among those who work in zoo settings. This qualitative study explored the personal experiences of zoo animal loss among volunteers ( = 12), animal care and health professionals (ACHPs) ( = 135), and other zoo staff ( = 35) who participated in a larger mixed-method study.

Background: The target population for active surveillance culture (ASC) of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus species (VRE) by stool or rectal swabs has not been fully determined during VRE outbreaks in healthcare settings in non-VRE endemic situation.
Aim: To evaluate cumulative incidences of VRE detection during a vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium outbreak to determine reasonable target populations for ASC.
Methods: Cases included inpatients whose first VRE-positive sample was obtained at Shizuoka General Hospital between February 2022 and January 2023, during which we conducted admission screening for possible high-risk patients, bi-weekly screening of all inpatients, admission and discharge screening in the high-care unit, and screening of contacts in each ward using stool or rectal samples.

Fluid preserved animal specimens in the collections of natural history museums constitute an invaluable archive of past and present animal diversity. Well-preserved specimens have a shelf-life spanning centuries and are widely used for e.g.

Zoos are under increasing pressure to strategically manage their collections to maximize visitor attendance, financial income, and their contribution to conservation. As a result, the compositions of zoo collections are undergoing significant changes. Many zoos are keeping fewer species and prioritizing keeping large flagship animals that are more attractive to the public.

While housing nonbreeding all-male social groups of African lion (panthera leo) is a necessary part of managing this polygynous species ex situ, resulting intraspecific agonistic behavior can negatively impact animal welfare and guest experience, undermining two primary objectives of modern zoological gardens. Improvest is a gonadotropin releasing factor analog-diphtheria toxoid conjugate marketed for temporary immunological castration which has proven successful in reducing aggression in other zoo-housed species. To the authors' knowledge, the use of this technique has not been described in male African lions; reticence to use GnRH agonists may stem from concern about phenotypic effects (mane loss) and zoo visitor perception.
