Researchers have dedicated their efforts for the creation of a wide choice of complex and precise macromolecular architectures over the past 100 years. Among them, cyclic polymers benefit from their absence of terminal chains and from their singular topology to minimize their hydrodynamic volume in solution, increase their chemical stability, limit their number of possible conformations as well as a reduce their propensity to crystallize or to form entanglements in comparison to their acyclic counterparts. While monocyclic structures have already been widely investigated and reviewed, reports on more complex polycyclic structures are rare. In this regard, cage-shaped polymers-consisting of at least three polymer chains covalently interconnected through strictly two junction points-have received little attention over the past two decades. Although their synthesis is a worthy challenge, only a few synthetic methodologies of polymer cages were successfully developed so far. Thus, this review intends to highlight the key concepts of the conception of cage-shaped polymers in addition to propose an actual and exhaustive state-of-art concept of their synthesis to rationally promote the next-generation synthesis strategies.

Polymer single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) have found a wide range of applications spanning catalysts, sensors and nanomedicine. The generation of structured SCNPs from star-shaped polymers with diverse architectures and functionalities affords a new avenue to expand the emerging research area. The large-scale synthesis of structured SCNPs is described by the electrostatics-mediated intramolecular crosslinking of three types of 3-armed star-shaped polymers (T-P4VP, T-PS-b-P4VP, and T-P4VP-b-PS), whose configuration is tunable from spherical to cage-shaped to dumbbell-shaped and star-shaped.

The intergranular interface modification of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OHP) is an important issue to regulate the flexibility, stability, and resistive switching (RS) performance of resistive random-access memories (RRAMs). A novel strategy of polymer additives for OHP intergranular interface modification is explored in this work with the polyanionic backbone to improve the distribution of cage-shaped cavity molecules at the perovskite grain boundaries. Specifically speaking, poly(1-adamantylammonium acrylate) (PADAm) is first synthesized through the acid-base reaction of polyacrylic acid with 1-adamantylamine to simultaneously realize the introduction of a cage-shaped cavity molecule and the polyanionic backbone.

Nanorobots hold great promise for integrated drug delivery systems that are responsive to molecular triggers. Herein, we successfully developed an automatic smart bionanorobot that has transport capability and recognizes and removes zinc ions from poisoned cells based on nanoscale polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane molecules. This intelligent bionanorobot can easily move inside and outside the cell and find zinc ions owing to its highly selective recognition to zinc ions and high cell permeability, especially the well-combined high penetration and strong binding energy.

Based on solvothermal synthesis, self-assembly of the heptadentate 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(nicotinoylhydrazone) Schiff base ligand (HL) and Zn(II) and/or Cd(II) salts has led to the formation of three homometallic [CdL] (), {[CdL]∙0.5dmf∙HO} () and {[ZnL]∙0.5dmf∙1.
