Background: Since the emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), various clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic to severe, life-threatening courses have been presented. It is well known that COVID-19 patients are at an increased risk of pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) development; however, the associated demographic, medical, and clinical factors for developing PTE remain unknown. The current study aimed to assess the characteristics of patients with PTE.
Methods: This case-control study was derived from an ongoing population-based investigation of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The case group included 99 patients with PTE confirmed by computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA), and the controls (N=132) were age-matched patients selected from the PTE-suspected patients with a negative CTPA. The demographic, medical, and clinical characteristics of the study population were entered into the study checklist and compared. A logistic regression test was used to determine the factors associated with PTE development.
Results: Among the 13,099 admitted patients, 690 (5.26%) were suspected of having PTE according to their clinical manifestations. CTPA was performed for suspected cases, and PTE was confirmed in 132 patients (19.13%). Logistic regression assessments revealed that male gender (OR, 2.39; 95%CI, 1.38‒4.13), decreased oxygen saturation (OR, 2.33; 95%CI, 1.27‒4.26), and lower hemoglobin (OR, 0.83, 0.95), and albumin (OR, 0.31; 95%CI, 0.18‒0.53) levels were associated with PTE development.
Conclusion: PTE was confirmed in one-fifth of suspected patients who underwent CTPA imaging. Male sex, decreased oxygen saturation, and lower levels of hemoglobin and albumin were independent predictors of PTE in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.

The widespread use of pesticides, including diazinon, poses an increased risk of environmental pollution and detrimental effects on biodiversity, food security, and water resources. In this study, we investigated the impact of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTE) including Zn, Cd, V, and Mn on the degradation of diazinon in three different soils. We investigated the capability and performance of four machine learning models to predict residual pesticide concentration, including adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), support vector regression (SVR), radial basis function (RBF), and multi-layer perceptron (MLP).

Radiotherapy is an integral modality in treating human cancers, but radioresistance remains a clinical challenge due to the involvement of multiple intrinsic cellular and extrinsic tumour microenvironment factors that govern radiosensitivity. To study the intrinsic factors that are associated with cancer radioresistance, we established 4 radioresistant prostate (22Rv1 and DU145) and head and neck cancer (FaDu and HK1) models by irradiating their wild-type parentals to 90 Gy, mimicking the fractionated radiotherapy schema that is often using in the clinic, and performed whole exome and transcriptome sequencing of the radioresistant and wild-type models. Comparative genomic analyses detected the enrichment of mismatch repair mutational signatures (SBS6, 14, 15, 20) across all the cell lines and several non-synonymous single nucleotide variants involved in pro-survival pathways.

Mesenchymal Stromal/Stem Cells (MSCs) are among the most frequently studied cell types in clinical trials, and their small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are now being extensively investigated for therapeutic applications. The RNA cargo of MSC-sEVs, particularly miRNAs and mRNAs, is widely believed to be a key therapeutic component of these vesicles. In this review, we critically examine using first principles and peer-reviewed literature, whether MSC- extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) can deliver sufficient quantity of functional miRNA or mRNA to target compartments within recipient cells to elicit a pharmacological response.

In this work, a novel fluorescent probe (compound 2) based on the Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism was designed and successfully applied to determine HS in human serum. Fluorophore 1,8-naphthalimide was chosen, while the azide group was the recognition group for HS determination. By introducing p-toluidine moiety on the imide part of the molecule, a donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated system was formed.

Soil potentially toxic element (PTE) pollution, especially in karst regions, poses significant ecological risks due to the unique geological features and environmental conditions. This study focuses on the delayed geochemical hazard (DGH) model to assess the progressive risks of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) contamination in the surface soils of karst regions in southwestern China. The study found that Pb and Cd pollution in karst areas presents ecological risks, with the region's high porosity and alkaline soils facilitating the transformation of pollutants from stable to mobile forms.
