A novel computer-aided method for direct measurements and visualization of gingival margin changes.

J Clin Periodontol

Department of Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics, University Medical Centre Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Published: February 2022

Aim: To introduce and validate a computer-aided method for direct measurements and visualization of gingival margin (GM) changes.

Materials And Methods: The method consists of five main steps: digital model acquisition, superimposition, computer-aided GM detection, distance calculation between the GM curves, and visualization. The precision of the method was evaluated with repeatability and reproducibility analysis (n = 78 teeth). The method's repeatability was evaluated by repeating the algorithm on the same digital models by two operators. The reproducibility was evaluated by repeating the algorithm on two consecutive digital models obtained with a scan-rescan process at the same time point on the same patient. For demonstration, the proposed method for direct measurements of GM changes was performed on patients who had undergone root coverage procedures and treatment of periodontal disease.

Results: Excellent repeatability was found for both intra- and inter-operator variability, that is, 0.00 mm, regarding computer-aided GM detection. The reproducibility of computer-aided GM detection evaluated on scan-rescan models was 0.10 mm.

Conclusions: The presented method enables the evaluation of GM changes in a simple, precise, and comprehensive manner through non-invasive acquisition and superimposition of digital models.

Amplification of Secondary Flow at the Initiation Site of Intracranial Sidewall Aneurysms.

Cardiovasc Eng Technol

January 2025

Department of Hydrodynamic Systems, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Műegyetem rkp. 1-3, Budapest, 1111, Hungary.

Purpose: The initiation of intracranial aneurysms has long been studied, mainly by the evaluation of the wall shear stress field. However, the debate about the emergence of hemodynamic stimuli still persists. This paper builds on our previous hypothesis that secondary flows play an important role in the formation cascade by examining the relationship between flow physics and vessel geometry.

Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of the direct inferior endplate approach in percutaneous endoscopic interlaminar discectomy (PEID) for the treatment of L5-S1 disc herniation.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 116 patients with L5-S1 disc herniation treated with PEID; 74 patients underwent surgery via the direct inferior endplate approach (group A), and 42 patients underwent surgery via the indirect approach (group B). The number of intraoperative fluoroscopy exposures, establishment channel time, operation time, postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) score, and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were compared between the 2 groups.

Prognosis of Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy Flap Necrosis: Predictors of Failure and Salvage.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

January 2025

Department of Plastic Surgery, Samsung Medical Center, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, 81 Irwon-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, 06351, Republic of Korea.

Background: In the realm of implant-based breast reconstruction, mastectomy flap necrosis (MFN) is a prevalent yet grave complication that poses a threat to the stability of the inserted prosthesis. Although numerous investigations have scrutinized the risk factors for MFN development, few have delved into the aftermath, specifically implant failure or salvage. This study seeks to appraise the prognosis of the implanted prosthesis following MFN occurrence, as well as identify predictors of such outcomes.

January 2025

Lehrstuhl für Ernährung und Immunologie, School of Life Sciences, Technische Universität München, Gregor-Mendel-Straße 2, 85354, Freising, Deutschland.

Background: The intestinal microbiota comprises all living microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract and is crucial for its function. Clinical observations and laboratory findings confirm a central role of the microbiota in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). However, many mechanistic details remain unclear.
