A hallmark of chronic and inflammatory diseases is the formation of a fibrotic and stiff extracellular matrix (ECM), typically associated with abnormal, leaky microvascular capillaries. Mechanisms explaining how the microvasculature responds to ECM alterations remain unknown. Here, we used a microphysiological model of capillaries on a chip mimicking the characteristics of healthy or fibrotic collagen to test the hypothesis that perivascular cells mediate the response of vascular capillaries to mechanical and structural changes in the human ECM.

Genome-resolved adaptation strategies of to changing conditions in the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays.

Appl Environ Microbiol

January 2025

Department of Biological Sciences, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, USA.

Unlabelled: The abundant and metabolically versatile aquatic bacterial order, , influences marine biogeochemical cycles. We assessed metagenome-assembled genome (MAG) abundance, estimated growth rates, and potential and expressed functions in the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, two important US estuaries. Phylogenomics of draft and draft/closed genomes from this study and others placed 46 nearly complete MAGs from these bays into 11 genera, many were not well characterized.

Introduction: Traditionally, wards in acute care hospitals consist predominately of multioccupancy bays with some single rooms. There is an increasing global trend towards a higher proportion of single rooms in hospitals, with the UK National Health Service (NHS) advocating for single-room provision in all new hospital builds. There is limited evidence on the impact of a ward environment incorporating mostly single and some multioccupancy bays on patient care and organisational outcomes.

Sex inequalities in cardiovascular risk prediction.

Cardiovasc Res

September 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Imperial College London, 90 Wood Ln, London W12 0BZ, UK.

Aims: Evaluate sex differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction, including use of (i) optimal sex-specific risk predictors and (ii) sex-specific risk thresholds.

Methods And Results: Prospective cohort study using UK Biobank, including 121 724 and 182 632 healthy men and women, respectively, aged 38-73 years at baseline. There were 11 899 (men) and 9110 (women) incident CVD cases (hospitalization or mortality) with a median of 12.

The Massachusetts Bays National Estuary Partnership is one of 28 programs in the United States Environmental Protection Agency's National Estuary Program (NEP) charged with developing and implementing comprehensive plans for protecting and restoring the biological integrity and beneficial uses of their estuarine systems. The Partnership has recently updated their comprehensive management plan to include restoration targets for coastal habitats, and as part of this effort, the program explored how to better demonstrate that recovery of ecological integrity of degraded ecosystems also provides ecosystem services that humans want and need. An essential step was to identify key stakeholders and understand the benefits important to them.
