scRNA-seq datasets are increasingly used to identify gene panels that can be probed using alternative technologies, such as spatial transcriptomics, where choosing the best subset of genes is vital. Existing methods are limited by a reliance on pre-existing cell type labels or by difficulties in identifying markers of rare cells. We introduce an iterative approach, geneBasis, for selecting an optimal gene panel, where each newly added gene captures the maximum distance between the true manifold and the manifold constructed using the currently selected gene panel. Our approach outperforms existing strategies and can resolve cell types and subtle cell state differences.

Humans rationally balance detailed and temporally abstract world models.

How do people model the world's dynamics to guide mental simulation and evaluate choices? One prominent approach, the Successor Representation (SR), takes advantage of temporal abstraction of future states: by aggregating trajectory predictions over multiple timesteps, the brain can avoid the costs of iterative, multi-step mental simulation. Human behavior broadly shows signatures of such temporal abstraction, but finer-grained characterization of individuals' strategies and their dynamic adjustment remains an open question. We developed a task to measure SR usage during dynamic, trial-by-trial learning.

Current industrial separation and sorting technologies struggle to efficiently identify and classify a large part of Waste of Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) plastics due to their high content of certain additives. In this study, Raman spectroscopy in combination with machine learning methods was assessed to develop classification models that could improve the identification and separation of Polystyrene (PS), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Polycarbonate (PC) and the blend PC/ABS contained in WEEE streams, including black plastics, to increase their recycling rate, and to enhance plastics circularity. Raman spectral analysis was carried out with two lasers of different excitation wavelengths (785 nm and 1064 nm) and varying setting parameters (laser power, integration time, focus distance) with the aim at reducing the fluorescence.

An L-plug-and-play approach for MPI using a zero shot denoiser with evaluation on the 3D open MPI dataset.

Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) is an emerging medical imaging modality which has gained increasing interest in recent years. Among the benefits of MPI are its high temporal resolution, and that the technique does not expose the specimen to any kind of ionizing radiation. It is based on the non-linear response of magnetic nanoparticles to an applied magnetic field.

Objective: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective neurosurgical option for patients with treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Despite being more costly than neuroablative procedures of comparable efficacy, DBS has gained popularity over the years for its reversibility and adjustability. Although the cost-effectiveness of DBS has been investigated extensively in movement disorders, few economic analyses of DBS for psychiatric disorders exist.

Importance: Despite guideline recommendations to use low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) or direct oral anticoagulants in the treatment of most patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE), US-based studies have found increasing use of unfractionated heparin (UFH) in hospitalized patients.

Objective: To identify barriers and facilitators of guideline-concordant anticoagulation in patients hospitalized with acute PE.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This qualitative study conducted semistructured interviews from February 1 to June 3, 2024, that were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed in an iterative process using reflexive thematic analysis.
