The healthcare workforce has played an integral role in fighting COVID-19 and continues to do so despite the continuous adverse outcomes. To address this issue, official public data concerning COVID-19 cases and deaths of Peruvian physicians was used to quantify the risk of death and infection by SARS-CoV-2. 20.9% Peruvian physicians were infected and 0.7% died, with the male general practitioners being the most affected group within the workforce. Notably, the Loreto region was disproportionately affected and had the highest cumulative incidence, mortality and case fatality rate. Ultimately, this identified risk group needs to be supported with sufficient resources/tools such as personal protective equipment, training, access to health care, vaccination, etc.

Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, 630 West 168th Street, New York, NY, 10032, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Blood-based biomarkers like p-tau217 are being studied for their effectiveness in diagnosing Alzheimer's disease (AD), but previous research has mainly focused on non-Hispanic White populations, leading to a knowledge gap across different ethnic backgrounds.
  • A new study involving Peruvians, including mestizos and indigenous groups, examined plasma p-tau217 in 525 individuals, revealing significant associations between the biomarker and AD, especially in those with the APOE-e4 allele, although it did not distinguish between healthy controls and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
  • The results indicated that p-tau217 levels correlated well with cognitive performance and had an impressive classification performance (ROC-AUC of 82.82%), marking a significant contribution to understanding AD in diverse

Through this work, the Peruvian physician José Manuel Dávalos tried to be appointed as a foreign member of the prestigious Royal Society of Medicine, from France, at the end of 1787. Despite a laudatory letter of introduction from a Spanish diplomat, his application was rejected, possibly due to Dávalos' lack of credibility in the sense of David Bloor or Steven Shapin.

In 1820 two French scientists - Pierre Joseph Pelletier and Jean Bienaimé Caventou - discovered and named the active alkaloid substance extracted from cinchona bark: quinine. The bark from the 'wondrous' fever tree, and its antimalarial properties, however, had long been known to both colonial scientists and indigenous Peruvians. From the mid-seventeenth century, cinchona bark, taken from trees that grow on the eastern slopes of the Andes, was part of a global circulation of botanical knowledge, practice and profit.
