Polyoxyethylene dehydration sorbitol monooleate (polysorbate-80) pretreatment enhanced volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production of waste activated sludge (WAS) in acidogenic fermentation. The results showed that polysorbate-80 ameliorated WAS solubilization obviously with a soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) increasing to 1536 mg/L within 4 h. Within 2 days of acidogenic fermentation, the maximal VFAs arrived to 2958.35 mg COD/L via polysorbate-80-pretreatment. The polysorbate-80 pretreatment boosted microbial diversity and richness in fermentation process. The Clostridium, Macellibacteroides and Acidocella strengthened microbial cooperation for the metabolic functions enhancement (e.g. amino acid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism) for VFAs generation from WAS organics. Overall, the polysorbate-80 could play positive roles on the transformation of organic matter from sludge solid matters to VFAs, which was turned out to become an effective enhancing strategy for future WAS treatment / bioresource recovery with relatively low cost.

Rationale: Various medium formulations contain essential fatty acids at concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 mg/L. Accurate and precise lipid measurement in media is crucial for monitoring media quality and conducting studies on lipids in the context of cell culture. This study employed two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) analyses to offer enhanced resolution, sensitivity, and separation performance compared to GC.

Commercially available cellulase cocktails frequently demonstrate high efficiency in hydrolyzing easily digestible pretreated biomass, which often lacks hemicellulose and/or lignin fractions. However, the challenge arises with enzymatic hydrolysis of mildly pretreated lignocellulosic biomasses, which contain cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in high proportions. This study aimed to address this question by evaluating the supplementation of a commercial cellulolytic cocktail with accessory hemicellulases and two additives (HO and Tween® 80).

In recent times, the methods used to evaluate gastric ulcer healing worldwide have been based on visual examinations and estimating ulcer dimensions in experimental animals. In this study, the protective effect of rhodanine and 2,4-thiazolidinediones scaffolds compared to esomeprazole was investigated in an ethanol model of stomach ulcers in rats. Pretreatment with experimental treatments or esomeprazole prevented the development of ethanol-induced gastric ulcers.

In this study, a combined pretreatment involving autohydrolysis and p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) was performed on poplar to coproduce xylooligosaccharides (XOSs) and monosaccharides. The autohydrolysis (180 °C, 30 min) yielded 53.2 % XOS and enhanced the delignification efficiency in the subsequent p-TsOH treatment.

Polysorbate 80 (PS 80) is a nonionic surfactant, used in myriad of pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic formulations. PS 80 components have strong UV absorbance and retain under reversed-phase chromatographic conditions, significantly masking sections of the chromatogram. PS 80-related peaks interferences in a sample are common and can be difficult to separate from the analyte peaks.
