Glucocorticoids decrease plasminogen activator (PA) activity in HTC rat hepatoma cells by inducing a specific inhibitor of PA activity (PAI). This inhibitor is similar in several biochemical properties to the PAI purified from bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAEs). We have used reverse fibrin autography and antiserum against BAE PAI to establish more fully the biochemical and immunological relationship of these inhibitors. Both inhibitors migrated with an apparent Mr of approximately 50,000, and the activity of both PAIs was stimulated by treatment with SDS suggesting that each of these molecules exists in both an active and a latent form. Antiserum to the BAE PAI immunoprecipitated all of the HTC PAI demonstrable by reverse fibrin autography. Finally, using this antiserum in a functional immunoassay, we have demonstrated that dexamethasone increases both active and latent PAI made by HTC cells. These results indicate that HTC PAI and BAE PAI are antigenically as well as biochemically related molecules.

Article Synopsis
  • * Deep learning is being explored to automate dental prosthetic processes, but the use of actual tooth images for training is challenging due to patient privacy concerns.
  • * The proposed solution combines image-to-image translation (pix2pix) and contextual reconstruction fill (CR-Fill) to generate virtual tooth images, which effectively assist in training models alongside real images, yielding comparable results.

An assessment of a GMP schistosomiasis vaccine (SchistoShield).

Front Trop Dis

July 2024

PAI Life Sciences, Seattle, WA, United States.

Introduction: Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease that puts over 200 million people at risk, and prevention options are sparse with no approved vaccine. Our vaccine candidate, SchistoShield, is based on an approximately 87 kDa large subunit of calcium activated neutral protease - termed Sm-p80 - combined with a potent TLR4 agonist-based adjuvant. SchistoShield has been shown to prevent disease throughout the parasitic life cycle - including egg, juvenile, and adult worm stages - in numerous animal models up to and including baboons.

Shoulder Bone Segmentation with DeepLab and U-Net.

Osteology (Basel)

June 2024

Dept. of Radiology, VA San Diego Healthcare System, San Diego, CA.

Evaluation of 3D bone morphology of the glenohumeral joint is necessary for pre-surgical planning. Zero echo time (ZTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides excellent bone contrast and can potentially be used in place of computed tomography. Segmentation of shoulder anatomy, particularly humeral head and acetabulum, is needed for detailed assessment of each anatomy and for pre-surgical preparation.

Impact of lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury in aged mice.

Exp Lung Res

November 2023

Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Eunpyeong St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

As the geriatric population rapidly expands, there has been a concurrent increase in elderly admissions to intensive care units (ICUs). Acute lung injury (ALI) is a prevalent reason for these admissions and carries poorer survival rates for the aged population compared to younger counterparts. The aging lung is subject to physiological, cellular, and immunological changes.

The Liver Tumor Segmentation Benchmark (LiTS).

Med Image Anal

February 2023

Department of Informatics, Technical University of Munich, Germany; Department of Quantitative Biomedicine, University of Zurich, Switzerland.

In this work, we report the set-up and results of the Liver Tumor Segmentation Benchmark (LiTS), which was organized in conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) 2017 and the International Conferences on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) 2017 and 2018. The image dataset is diverse and contains primary and secondary tumors with varied sizes and appearances with various lesion-to-background levels (hyper-/hypo-dense), created in collaboration with seven hospitals and research institutions. Seventy-five submitted liver and liver tumor segmentation algorithms were trained on a set of 131 computed tomography (CT) volumes and were tested on 70 unseen test images acquired from different patients.
