Supramolecular and covalent polymers share multiple structural effects such as chiral amplification, helical inversion, sergeants and soldiers, or majority rules, among others. These features are related to the axial helical structure found in both types of materials, which are responsible for their properties. Herein a novel material combining information and characteristics from both fields of helical polymers, supramolecular (oligo(-phenyleneethynylene) (OPE)) and covalent (poly(acetylene) (PA)), is presented. To achieve this goal, the poly(acetylene) must adopt a dihedral angle between conjugated double bonds (ω1) higher than 165°. In such cases, the tilting degree (Θ) between the OPE units used as pendant groups is close to 11°, like that observed in supramolecular helical arrays of these molecules. Polymerization of oligo[(-phenyleneethynylene)]phenylacetylene monomers ( = 1, 2) bearing -decyl alaninate as the pendant group yielded the desired scaffolds. These polymers adopt a stretched and almost planar polyene helix, where the OPE units are arranged describing a helical structure. As a result, a novel multihelix material was prepared, the ECD spectra of which are dominated by the OPE axial array.

A Novel Dual Cross-linking Reagent for Dentin Bonding Interface Stability.

J Dent Res

December 2024

State Key Lab of Supramolecular Structure and Materials, College of Chemistry, Jilin University, Changchun, China.

The cross-linking reagent has been proposed as a means of modifying dentin collagen, inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase activities, and enhancing bond durability during dentin bonding procedures. This study aimed to synthesize an operation-friendly dual cross-linking reagent-3-(4-formyphenoxy)-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (FPA)-to assess its ability to cross-link dentin collagen and reduce enzymatic activity at the bonding interface. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by a cell counting kit-8 test and calcein AM/propidium iodide assay.

The high potential of non-covalent arene-fluoroarene intermolecular interactions in the design of liquid crystals lies in their ability to strongly promote self-assembly, improve the order and stability of the supramolecular mesophases, and enable tuneability of the optical and electronic properties, which can potentially be exploited for advanced applications in display technologies, photonic devices, sensors, and organic electronics. We recently successfully reported the straightforward synthesis of several mesogens containing four lateral aliphatic chains and derived from the classical triphenylene core self-assembling in columnar mesophases based on this paradigm. These mesogenic compounds were simply obtained in good yields by the nucleophilic substitution (SFAr) of various types of commercially available fluoroarenes with the electrophilic organolithium derivatives 2,2'-dilithio-4,4',5,5'-tetraalkoxy-1,1'-biphenyl (2Li- ).

Polymeric biomaterials have important applications in aiding clinical disease treatment, including drug delivery, bioimaging, and tissue engineering. Currently, conventional tumor chemotherapy faces obstacles such as poor solubility/stability, inability to target, and uncontrolled drug release in clinical trials, for which the emergence of supramolecular material therapeutics combining non-covalent interactions with conventional therapies is a very promising candidate. Due to their molecular recognition abilities with a range of biomolecules, cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]), a type of macrocyclic receptors with robust backbones, hydrophobic cavities, and carbonyl-binding channels, have garnered a lot of attention.

The polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) polymer is here functionalized with branched and biocompatible polysaccharide dextran (DEX) molecules. Covalent conjugation of DEX to PAH has been achieved through a straightforward reductive amination approach, allowing for a controlled number of DEX chains per PAH polymer (PAH:DEX, n = 0.1, 0.

Understanding the mechanism of self-assembly driven by non-covalent interactions is crucial for designing supramolecular materials with desired properties. Here we investigate the self-assembly of aromatic peptide amphiphiles, Fmoc-L2QG and Fmoc-L3QG using a combination of spectroscopic, transmission electron and superresolution optical microscopy techniques. Our results show that Fmoc-L2QG leads to concentration-dependent assembly, forming fibrous assemblies at low concentrations and supramolecular droplets via liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) at higher concentrations.
