The effects of scatterer size and scattering coefficient on backscattered linearly and circularly polarized light are investigated through Stokes polarimetry. High-SNR polarization modulation/synchronous detection measurements are corroborated by polarization-sensitive Monte Carlo simulations. Circular degree of polarization (DOP) is found to be sensitive to scatterer size, but is equivocal at times due to helicity flipping effects; linear DOP appears to be mostly dependent on the medium scattering coefficient. We exploit these trends to generate a DOP - DOP response surface which clusters turbid samples based on these medium properties. This work may prove useful in biomedicine, for example in noninvasive assessment of epithelial precancer progression.

We report the features of spontaneous bilateral thyroid follicular cell carcinoma in a 10-year-old male beagle. Necropsy revealed bilateral masses on the trachea, corresponding to the left and right sides of the thyroid gland. The masses were elastic, encapsulated, and distinct, with no connecting tumor tissues between them.

Genetically engineered immune cells hold great promise for treating immune-related diseases, but their development is hindered by technical challenges, primarily related to nucleic acid delivery. Polyethylenimine (PEI) is a cost-effective transfection agent, yet it requires significant optimization for effective T cell transfection. In this study, we comprehensively fine-tuned the characteristics of PEI/DNA nanoparticles, culture conditions, cellular physiology, and transfection protocols to enhance gene delivery into T cells.

Mesoporous silica exhibits a diverse range of applications owing to its pore structure and inter-pore correlation. Consequently, quantitative characterization of its mesoscopic structure is extremely crucial to reciprocate its potential applications. In this work, we utilized the chemical and aerosol routes to successfully synthesize granular, porous silica with an average pore size in the range of ∼5-10 nm and different degrees of structural correlation among its pores.

Serum albumin has myriad uses in biotechnology, but its value as a nanocarrier or nanoplatform for therapeutics is becoming increasingly important, notably with albumin-bound chemotherapeutics. Another emerging field is the fabrication of biopolymeric nanoparticles using albumin as a building block to achieve highly-tunable nonimmunogenic capsules or scaffolds that may be cheaply and reliably produced. The aim of this study was to characterize and optimize the desolvation process used for fabrication of albumin nanoparticles under ambient conditions, studying both glutaraldehyde (GT) and glucose (GLU) as crosslinking agents and the effect of various synthesis conditions including pH, electrolyte concentration, and rate of desolvation on particle size and stability.

An emulsion of silicone oil droplets in aqueous buffer produces a distinctive series of peaks or resonances in the side scatter histogram in a flow cytometer. As many as 12 peaks are observed in the violet-side scatter channel at 405 nm, with half that number observed in the blue side scatter channel at 488 nm. Using the index of refraction of the oil and buffer, the wavelength of light, and the collection angle and gain of the instrument, we assign the peaks to specific diameters at which Mie resonances occur.
