The heat shock response (HSR) is a universal mechanism of cellular adaptation to elevated temperatures and is regulated by heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) or HSF3 in vertebrate endotherms, such as humans, mice, and chickens. We here showed that HSF1 and HSF3 from egg-laying mammals (monotremes), with a low homeothermic capacity, equally possess a potential to maximally induce the HSR, whereas either HSF1 or HSF3 from birds have this potential. Therefore, we focused on cellular adaptation to daily temperature fluctuations and found that HSF1 was required for the proliferation and survival of human cells under daily temperature fluctuations.

Marsupial neonates are born with immature immune systems, making them vulnerable to pathogens. While neonates receive maternal protection, they can also independently combat pathogens, though the mechanisms remain unknown. Using the sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) as a model, we investigated immunological defense strategies of marsupial neonates.

Article Synopsis
  • - Two echidnas at a zoo experienced issues like anorexia and lethargy, with one dying shortly after being transferred to another facility where severe thyroid problems were found postmortem.
  • - The second echidna was euthanized after a CT scan revealed a mass compressing important blood vessels, which was later diagnosed as thyroid adenocarcinoma.
  • - These cases highlight the importance of using IV contrast and CT scans for diagnosing thyroid diseases in echidnas.

Forkhead box protein P3 (FOXP3) is known to orchestrate the development and maintenance of T regulatory cells, a cell population specialized in immune suppression and peripheral immune tolerance. FOXP3 activity is fine-tuned through its interaction with several protein-binding partners. By using IntAct database, we retrieved three physical binary interactors: E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase CHIP, Zfp-90, and nuclear receptor ROR-α.

Chlorine (Cl) is a disinfectant often used in swimming pools and water treatment facilities. However, it is released into aquatic ecosystems, where it may harm non-targeted organisms. Here, we performed a mesocosm experiment exposing Zacco platypus (Z.
