Any survivor among the millions of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for critical illness each year is susceptible to persistent health problems that continue after discharge and may lead to post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), defined as new or worsening dysfunction from physical impairment, cognitive impairment, or emotional impairment, or a combination. Considering the increased rates of ICU survival and the growing elderly population more likely to utilize ICU resources, critical care practitioners have broadened their focus on outcomes and care of ICU survivors to include the acute post-ICU survival period as well as months and even years after ICU discharge. This review focuses on the neuropsychiatric aspects of PICS in ICU survivors including diagnostic, screening, and treatment recommendations. It also highlights the value of post-ICU clinics and the unique role of the consultation psychiatrist in the care of this patient population.

Introduction: Abusive head injury is more common in younger children, with long lasting physical or neurologic impairments seen in many survivors. There is a close relationship between hyperglycemia and head injury, with hyperglycemia associated with worse outcomes. Our hypothesis is that abusive head injury patients are more likely to have significant hyperglycemia.

Introduction: This study aimed to explore changes in the venous return system in patients with Constrictive pericarditis (CP) after pericardial stripping and examine their value in predicting mortality.
Methods: An 8-year single-center retrospective cohort study including patients with CP after pericardial stripping surgery. Hemodynamic parameters were analyzed in 90 patients at 11 time points including before and after surgery and every 4 to 9 hours in the first 48 hours in the ICU (pre-operation, post-operation, 0h, t1, t2, t3, 24h, t4, t5, t6, 48h).

Certain aspects of intensive care unit admission and care, including patient acuity and treatments to manage acute critical illnesses, can intensify loss of functionality and decrease quality of life after hospital discharge. We sought to identify the risk factors associated with functional decline following critical illness and explore its impact on health-related quality of life in a post hoc analysis of a prospective multi-center cohort study. The study involved 1,301 critically ill subjects who were assessed 3 months after their discharge from the ICU.
