We report the synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the new heptacoordinated mononuclear erbium(III) complex (EtNH)[Er(HDAPS)Cl] (HDAPS = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-(salicylhydrazone)) (1). The coordination polyhedron around the Er(III) ion features a slightly distorted pentagonal bipyramid formed by the pentagonal NO chelate ring of the HDAPS ligand in the equatorial plane and two apical chloride ligands. Detailed high-frequency/high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HF-EPR) studies of 1 result in the precise determination of the crystal field (CF) splitting energies (0, 290 and 460 GHz) and effective -values of the three lowest Kramers doublets (KDs) of the Er(III) ion. The obtained HF-EPR data are in good agreement with the results from CF analysis for the Er(III) ion based on the simulation of the dc magnetic data of 1. The results from dynamic susceptibility measurements indicate that there is no slow relaxation of magnetisation behaviour. This observation is discussed in terms of the electronic structure of 1 obtained from experimental and theoretical results.

Isostructural Dy(III) and Er(III) complexes [L12Ln(H2O)5][I]3·L12·(CH2Cl2) (Ln = Dy (1), Er (3)) and [L22Ln(H2O)5][I]3·L22·(CH2Cl2)2 (Ln = Dy (2), Er (4)), with distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry (D5h) around the central metal were synthesized by utilizing two bulky phosphonamide ligands, adamantyl phosphonamide, (Ad)P(O)(NHiPr)2 (L1) and carbazolyl phosphoramide (Cz)P(O)(NHiPr)2 (L2). The resultant complexes were investigated for their magnetic properties in order to elucidate the impact of modification of the coordinating P-O bond environment either by increasing steric bulk and/or introduction of a third P-N bond at the central phosphorus atom. Magnetic studies revealed substantial energy barriers (Ueff) of 640 K and 560 K for Dy compounds 1 and 2, respectively, rendering them as some of the best-performing air-stable SIMs amongst the class of SIMs with D5h symmetry.

Among lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs), erbium(III) is a Kramers ion, apart from dysprosium(III), which provides magnetic bistability in the presence of a suitable coordination environment. However, Er-based SMMs exhibit significantly less magnetic anisotropy than Dy because their prolate electronic density necessitates equatorially correlated ligands to minimize the charge contact with the Er atom. Here, in this work, we have computationally investigated the heteroleptic organometallic complexes with an Er(III) atom sandwiched between two distinct cyclic rings (five- and eight-membered) with the aim of tuning the magnetic anisotropy via exploiting the ligand field.

By combining Er and Yb ions with 3,6-dithiophene-anilate (ThAn) and scorpionate hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate (HBpz) ligands new luminescent dinuclear complexes are obtained. The two materials formulated as [((HB(pz))Yb)(μ-thAn)]·4DCM·1.3HO and [((HB(pz))Er)(μ-thAn)]·4DCM·1.

A relatively unexplored approach in heterometallic chemistry of transition metals and lanthanides has been developed toward the controlled synthesis of a new family of linear heterotrinuclear Ln(III)-Pd(II)-Ln(III) complexes with the general formula [LnPd(pao)(NO)(MeOH)(HO)]·[Pd(pao)], where Ln = Dy (2), Gd (3), Er (4) and Yb (5). This strategy was based on the diamagnetic 'metalloligand' [Pd(pao)] (1), where pao is the anion of 2-pyridinealdoxime, containing two dangling oximate O-atoms which were to each other and available for binding with oxophilic lanthanide ions. Because of their -configuration, the [Pd(pao)] 'metalloligand' was able to direct the binding of two {Ln(NO)(MeOH)(HO)} units on opposite sites, thus yielding the reported trinuclear {Ln-Pd-Ln} clusters.

Here we report on the Magneto-Chiral Dichroism (MChD) detected through visible and near-infrared light absorption of two enantiomeric pairs of Er and Tm chiral complexes featuring a propeller-like molecular structure. The magnetic properties show typical features of isolated paramagnetic ions associated with I and H ground state terms. MChD spectroscopy shows high g dissymmetry factors of ca.
