Production of Copolyester Monomers from Plant-Based Acrylate and Acetaldehyde.

PCTA is an important copolyester that has been widely used in our daily necessities. Currently, its monomers are industrially produced from petroleum-derived xylene. To reduce the reliance on fossil energy, we herein disclose an alternative route to access PCTA monomer (terephthalate/isophthalate=2.4/1) in 61 % overall yield using plant-based acrylate and acetaldehyde as the feedstocks. The process includes Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction of acetaldehyde with acrylate, subsequent one-step dehydration/Diels-Alder reaction with acrylate over H SO /SiO catalyst, and final Pd/C-catalyzed dehydrogenation. Besides, when varying the final step to hydrogenation, another important monomer UNOXOL™ diol (1,4-trans/1,4-cis/1,3-trans/1,3-cis=5.2/2/2.5/1) can be produced in 67 % overall yield.

Background & Aim: Dietary shifts replacing animal protein (AP) with plant protein (PP) sources have been associated with lowering cardiometabolic risk (CMR), but underlying mechanisms are poorly characterized. This nutritional intervention aims to characterize the metabolic changes induced by diets containing different proportions of AP and PP sources in males at CMR.

Design: This study is a 4-week, crossover, randomized, controlled-feeding trial in which 19 males with CMR followed two diets providing either 36 % for the control diet (CON-D) or 64 % for the flexitarian diet (FLEX-D) of total protein intake from PP sources.

To investigate the impact of extrusion parameters on the formation of -(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), -(carboxyethyl)lysine (CEL) and acrylamide in plant-based meat analogues (PBMAs), the content changes and the correlations of compounds related to their formation were studied. The extrusion promoted CML, CEL and acrylamide formation, with more CEL being formed than CML. Variations in the moisture level and barrel temperature exerted a greater influence on the CML, CEL, acrylamide and α-dicarbonyl compounds than the screw speed and the feed rate.

Processed plant-based foods, particularly high carbohydrate-containing foods, are among the greatest contributors to dietary acrylamide, a probable human carcinogen, uptake. Between 2009 and 2020, five surveys were conducted to determine acrylamide in high carbohydrate-containing foods in Canada. These surveys included sampling of potato and sweet potato chips, French fries, and frozen potato/sweet potato products, as a follow-up to our earlier surveys from 2002 - 2008.
