  • Non-obstetric perineal injuries can result from blunt trauma, such as from sports or car accidents, and are prone to developing hematomas due to the vulva's rich blood supply.
  • Emergency treatment for traumatic arterial injuries often involves embolization techniques, like using coils or microspheres.
  • This case study highlights the use of gelfoam for temporary embolization to prevent tissue necrosis in a patient experiencing an expanding hematoma.

Article Abstract

Non-obstetric perineal injuries often occur as a result of blunt trauma from sport or vehicular accidents. Due to the rich vascular supply of the vulva, this region is susceptible to hematoma formation. Traumatic arterial injury usually involves emergency embolization, typically utilizing coils or microspheres. This case describes an incidence of the utilization of gelfoam for temporary embolization to prevent vulvar and labial necrosis in a patient with an actively expanding hematoma.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the penile fibrovascular assembly to determine if it functions as an independent vascular compartment within the human body, addressing a gap in cardiovascular research.
  • Researchers examined 23 male cadavers and analyzed extensive medical imaging and hemodynamic data to gain insight into the structure and function of the penile vasculature.
  • Results indicate that the human penis contains a unique bi-layered fibrovascular assembly with atypical vascular patterns, challenging previous assumptions about penile venous drainage.
