Microbial Biotechnology is 15! An adventure in journal parenting.

Microb Biotechnol

Institute of Microbiology, Technical University of Braunschweig, Braunschweig, Germany.

Published: January 2022

This year, 2022, Microbial Biotechnology (MBT) celebrates its 15th birthday. In journal terms, 15 is adulthood. It has been a privilege to develop the idea, launch the journal, nurture it in its infancy and stimulate and support it during its adolescence and early adulthood. The success of MBT - its growth over the last 4 years averaging > 30%, and the highest impact factor in the field, making it the leading research journal in applied microbiology/microbial biotechnology and the most attractive to publish in - gives us enormous pleasure and satisfaction, and not a little pride.

Bioplastics, particularly polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), are emerging as promising alternatives to traditional materials due to their biodegradability. This study focuses on the production of PHAs as bioplastics using effluent from hydrogen production in a two-stage Biohythane Pilot Plant, which provides a low-cost substrate. The aim is to optimize production conditions, with Cupriavidus necator TISTR 1335 being used as the PHA producer.

Seed bacterization with siderophore-producing bacteria: a strategy to enhance growth and alkaloid content in Catharanthus roseus.

World J Microbiol Biotechnol

January 2025

Department of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Institute of Advanced Research, Koba Institutional Area, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, 382426, India.

Catharanthus roseus is a medicinal plant widely known for producing monoterpenoid indole alkaloids (MIAs), including therapeutic compounds such as vinblastine and vincristine, which are crucial for cancer treatment. However, the naturally low concentration of these alkaloids in plant tissues poses a significant challenge for large-scale production. This study explores the application of siderophore-producing bacteria for seed bacterization of Catharanthus roseus to enhance the production of MIAs, including vindoline, catharanthine, and vinblastine.

Bacteria as Precision Tools for Cancer Therapy.

Microb Biotechnol

January 2025

Estación Experimental del Zaidín, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Granada, Spain.

The discovery at the end of the 20th century of genes that induce cell death revolutionised the biocontaintment of genetically manipulated bacteria for environmental or agricultural applications. These bacterial 'killer' genes were then assayed for their potential to target and control malignant cells in human cancers. The identification of the bacteriomes in different human organs and tissues, coupled with the observation that bacteria tend to accumulate near tumours, has opened new avenues for anti-cancer strategies.

Non-halophytic plants are highly susceptible to salt stress, but numerous studies have shown that halo-tolerant microorganisms can alleviate this stress by producing phytohormones and enhancing nutrient availability. This study aimed to identify and evaluate native microbial communities from salt-affected regions to boost black gram () resilience against salinity, while improving plant growth, nitrogen uptake, and nodulation in saline environments. Six soil samples were collected from a salt-affected region in eastern Uttar Pradesh, revealing high electrical conductivity (EC) and pH, along with low nutrient availability.

Comparative analysis of the genomic and expression profiles of ANLN and KDR as prognostic markers in breast Cancer.

In Silico Pharmacol

January 2025

Department of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, State Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism, School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200240 China.

Unlabelled: Breast cancer (BC) remains a highly heterogeneous disease, complicating diagnosis and treatment. This study investigates the prognostic significance of Anillin () and Kinase Insert Domain Receptor () genes, focusing on their mutational and expression landscapes in BC using data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We found that high expression is strongly associated with poor overall survival, highlighting its potential as a robust prognostic marker.
